Did kj speak of a player hopping an Alumni charter after last years Rose Bowl to fly to his wife who was in labor? 1. What are the chances the plane was scheduled to go close or to that exact town? 2. Wouldn't the kid have to pay for the trip? 3. It seems a little prearranged that the kid would know about the charter and be ready to connect with the flight right after the game. It may be on the up and up, but kj made it sound like after the game the player was told, "Here is a flight, take it."
he said the kid took an alumni charter back home to LA after the game, then drove to his hometown after (I think in Utah or Nevada). that is questionable if it is a violation given the circumstances. I think the NCAA is too strict in some instances.
Really have no problem with kids getting help, just with the ncaa's unequal application of the rules. Wasn't it Galen Hall who got busted because he gave a player money so he could attend his Moms's funeral?
Didn't Chris Portman get busted for taking money from an agent the day of his last game or something to keep his mom from getting her house repossesed? I seem to remember something like this. I know it was wrong, but I think she was the one that cared for his kid while he was in school. How many of you wouldn't have done the same thing?
What is sad is that if a system was set up to allow assistance for these kids, some schools would use it outside the scope of intent. Thus, the kids are on their own.
I thought it was strange he said it in such a matter of fact manner, and while it might be a technical violation of NCAA rules - I would hate to see the kid have trouble if it was investigated, and the NCAA would never violate a sacred cow like USC....
