So much for changing the BCS for the better, huh? Using the actual votes in the formula has now caused voters to play games with their vote. I can't wait for the next BCS change! :dis:
Bob Stoops’ not-so-secret vote for Texas By John Bridges | Wednesday, December 8, 2004, 02:19 PM The 61 coaches ballots in the USA Today/ESPN poll remain a state secret, but slowly the code is getting cracked. This morning on KVET-AM’s “Bucky and Erin” show, Oklahoma assistant (and former Texas assistant) Bobby Jack Wright let slip the news that his boss, Bob Stoops, had voted the Longhorns “as high as No. 3 all year.” Isn’t that interesting? In the final coaches poll, Texas received three third-place votes and one second-place vote. I wonder which one was Stoops’? After all, the higher Texas is ranked, the better it makes the Sooners appear. Meanwhile, Kevin Robbins of our staff reported today that Texas football spokesman Bill Little said that Mack Brown did not vote his own team at No. 2. Little’s comments also suggested that Brown was not one of the voters who ranked Cal seventh or eighth. And newspaper stories in California say that Cal coach Jeff Tedford reportedly voted Cal fourth and Texas fifth in the final poll.
Here a fact. Most coaches don't have adequate time, during the season, to follow most of the teams in their own conference....let alone, the teams in other conferences. The head coaching game today is more demanding that at any time in history. Coaches are being asked to do much more (speaking, fundraising, charity/community, alumni events, etc., etc.) than ever before to justify their ever increasing salaries. It truly is more like a CEO position in that regard. In more cases than we'd like to know about, coaches routinely allow their SID's or Assistants to complete the poll due to busy schedules. There's really no control over the process to insure it's integrity. The coaches poll is outdated and is no longer capable of serving it's original purpose - to provide a credible check-balance to the writer's poll. Time for a change, IMO.
come on caddi. that's old news. everyone knows coaches don't follow this crap or really care unless it directly affects them. and the polls not being credible anymore is nothing new either. when were they legit? the preseason polls have killed many a team.
Yeah. I can understand a voter dropping Cal one spot to 5th based on their opinion of how the Bears played vs USM, but to drop a team--on the last game of the season, from 4th to 7th is TOTALLY unprofessional. The ballots can be kept secret. Basically, if that info would EVER get out, you can bet that there would be ENORMOUS problems! But every voter should be audited so-to-speak. They should look back and track every voter from week-to-week and in the case of the Cal fiasco, whatever coach dropped the Bears 3 whole spots should be confronted, investigated and then stripped of his voting abilities.
