It is being reported that Miles is talking to Dave Campo, ex-Dallas Cowboy head coach about coming to LSU as the DC. With Crowton as OC and Campo as DC, we will more firepower at the head coordinators position than I ever remember. IF, BIG IF, Miles can pull this off...a lot of the chicken-littles should come and deify Miles as the demi-god at LSU...can't be deified as God like Saint Nick until he wins another national championship. But as I discussed in another thread, really successful people , leaders, surround themselves with the talent to effectively manage the task. LSU presents Les Miles with significantly more upside tasks than OSU hence the quality of people he is talking to about the coordinator positions. In everything, I have read about Les, he is a leader...and by the way, I trust Skip!
Campo's Bio... May have went overboard on the demi-god comment, huh? http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/team/coaches.php?id=23
radrod, that all goes back to my respect for him at OSU. When he first took that position, he turned down part of the pay offered to him with the stipulation that it go to the Asst Coach positions. I had never heard of anyone doing that before and it really told me a lot about him. The man knows that the better coaches he gets, the better he does. A very smart move!
OkieTiger, now I understand a little better... why you guys had so much respect for him even in leaving. A guy who is confident enough to go after that kind of talent says couple of things: 1) he is not a control freak and 2) he is smart enough to realize he needs smart people around him. I am going to risk saying this and get emasculated by some people on this board. I think this was one of Saban's weaknesses...he was a control freak who didn't see the importance of surrounding himself with people smarter than he is. I am going to back this argument up with a conversation that had with a former NFL player who played for his uncle, Lou Saban but now works for me as a marketing director. When Saban was climbing to success last year, he was critical of Saban not doing better. When I asked what he meant, he said Saban was not a defensive guru as most people anoint him to be. He was a marketing professional of the highest caliber (look at what he did to Huizenga..."the dolphins did not hire Saban, Saban hired the dolphins", quote from Miami Herald). Took other peoples ideas...made them sound better...and sold them. His knock on Saban was not bringing in to LSU more qualified coordinators from the NFL to take more advantage of the LSU talent. NOT MY OPIONON...JUST REPEATING THE OPINION OF A PRO BOWL PLAYER...don't shoot the messenger.
Dave Campo has always struck me as a better college-oriented coach, anyways. I remember watching his "rah-rah" act in Dallas and thinking it must get pretty stale, pretty quick with those pros. Campo and Crowton---two former high-level NFL coaches---would be very nice indeed. Nice way to get some good coaching talent by giving them a chance to resuscitate their future career prospects while at LSU.
At this point I don't think you'll catch much flak, from anyone other than Sabanfan, for judging the character of Nick Saban. I haven't seen much of Sabanfan anyways since the departing of his "god".
Lou was Nick's uncle... When my guy played for the Buffaloe Bills with Lou Saban as the coach, he said Nick would come hang out during the summer workouts while in college...he called him Uncle but may have been a cousin or it could have been an affectionate term for an elder because he carried the same last name.
Campo will CERTAINLY look great in purple and gold!!!!! ......er....not to mention so would our defense! C'mon over Campo!!!!!!
