this story just posted on the DMN site, so it will be in the paper tomorrow. It is about the issues LSU had in 2001 in the Kinesiology department. Guess people have a hard time letting things die in Texas when recruits change their minds..... http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/stories/022205dnspoacadlsu.96168.html
Unpopular belief at LSU Graduate assistant didn't look away when she saw fraud at LSU 10:36 PM CST on Monday, February 21, 2005 By JEFF MILLER / The Dallas Morning News BATON ROUGE, La. – Caroline Owen was prepared to be called every nasty name imaginable on radio sports talk, in fan chat rooms and even in her own e-mail. She wasn't prepared for the threats to join her on a favorite cycling trail – in pickups. Or for the dead bird pinned to the front door of her apartment. That, she learned, was part of the price for publicly accusing LSU football players of academic fraud. Owen, a graduate assistant in the school's kinesiology department, sued LSU in March 2002. The suit primarily dealt with sexual harassment of a colleague but included the fraud allegations. It was settled out of court last December, and she received $150,000. NCAA officials say there is no record of similar settlements involving accusations of academic rule violations. School officials said the settlement was not an admission of guilt. Owen disagrees. "I don't see how you can pay somebody $150,000 and comply with all their requests if there's no [acknowledgement of] wrongdoing," said Owen, 35. But she said she hasn't felt like celebrating. "That was three and a half years of my life that was pretty horrible," she said. David Shelby II, a lawyer who represents LSU, said no one from the school could comment on Owen's case because a similar lawsuit, filed by a kinesiology instructor, is still pending. Owen was born in Baton Rouge, lived in Beaumont during her elementary school years, then returned to graduate from Parkview Baptist High School and enroll in the hometown university in 1988. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon...dlsu.96168.html
I have no problem with this being brought up. The purpose of universities should be to teach these athletes. The more these incidents come out in the open, the less they will happen. I hate the bad press, but atleast it's not like we are Ohio St or anything.
What REALLY irritates me about Owen and her Attorney is the fact that they both obviously have reveled in the situation. They LOVED "bringing down" the Athletetic Dept. Anyone who is wronged or persecuted at work has my sympathy and support. They, however deserve none. Does anyone out there know if the Attorney's business has suffered since the episode ? I sure hope so !
Shocking. Sadly, the writer doesn't have the balls to question big time college football in his own backyard. Here in texas you wouldn't have bird pinned to your door. More like, a dead deer on your car. Remember, everthing is BIGGER in texas, even the carcass.
The recent revelation about the U of Texas...... Having the WORST graduation rates of any Big12 football program and the fact that the shorthorns football program under Mack Brown rank 115th nationaly in graduation rates isn't newsworthy. Maybe the DMN will get around to focusing on the plight of the Longhorns in 2009 as it appears that it takes 4 years for information to reach that rag. The entire Caroline Owens case has been resolved and was basicly handled internally at LSU and LSU self-reported this entire situation to the NCAA. The NCAA accepted LSU's revue of the situation and LSU penalized itself by taking away a couple of football scholarships. this is old news and is much ado about nothing. I guess losing out on Ryan Perrilloux really has those idiots in an uproar but when they have to go back 4 years for a negative story to print and this is all they can come up with, well, it speaks pretty well of the LSU program. Screw Texas. Screw Mack Brown. They are nothing more than a pimple on LSU's ass.
