has anybody bought it yet, i love the guy to death even though he almost destroyed the lsu basketball program, the same guy that went to a final four as the 11th seed, in maybe one of the best coaching jobs in college basketball history, as they beat purdue memphis at the p mac, purdue in double ot, dominated Georgia tech at teh omni (old dome in georgia) and beat the number 1 team kentucky, remember skywalker from kentucky???, cant get past the second round with shaq stanley roberts cj, clarence caesar with the sweet jumper from the corner, wayne simms dale brown the same guy who challenged bobby knight to a wrestling match in a closet naked, and whoever came out with their jewels intact would be the winner, if my memory serves me right he would go on opposing teams radio shows and tv shows the night before a game and say stuff like not only are we going to win, we are going to go out and win by 20, also didnt daddy dale throw is coat on the court at kentucky one year and have it land right on the K or the state of kentucky outline, ah i miss daddy dale, i remember my dad telling me about how his first season didnt have any talent, and called his team the hustlers and put wanted posters all over town for the hustlers, he brought so much fun and enthusiasm to the program, he single handidly made basketball in louisiana along with the pistol, and for all the great memories he brought me, i will always forgive him for the ncaa violations. p.s. remember the game dale was wearing a mic and the tigers were down 1 and dale had said during the time out, ok we are gonna do this, then towards the end he said jose (vargas) jose dont touch the ball dont go anywhere near it dont be around it, who takes the final shot and miss to lose the game jose!
Daddy Dale: GREAT recruiter. :thumb: Maybe one of the best in the history of college hoops. CRAPPY coach. :dis: Maybe one of the worst in the history of college hoops. End of story.
Great coach, any who say he didn't know how to coach, better go back and check out his defense of the much better talented Ky teams. And yes he blow that 35 point lead on Ky, but that Ky team should have blown out LSU that year by 40 or better. BTW how many times did Ky lose to LSU before and after Brown 3 or 4?
Yeah I just love the oversimplificatoin that Dale was a "great" recruiter and a "poor" coach. He was on neither extreme as the only really talented teams he ever had were the 81-82 teams and the 90-91 teams. It's not like he was stacking the team every year. He was a pretty good recruiter and a pretty good coach. His legendary status at LSU was tarnished (destroyed?) when the much talented Shaq/Roberts/CJ team failed miserably and the entire mess he left the LSU program with upon his departure.
if he was a pretty good coach, then why OH WHY did he choose to stop passing the ball into Nikita Wilson in the low post against Indiana in '87 in the Elite Eight game???? Nikita tore 'em up ALL FREAKIN' GAME LONG and Daddy Dale took the ball out of his hands in the last six minutes and allowed IU back into the game, which they eventually won. A pretty good coach would NEVER make a mistake of that magnitude in that big of a game... Bobby the Thug NEVER had it so easy.... The Hoosiers took the Syracuse Orangemen in the finals that year.... IMO WE had the best chance to win it all that year of all of the Brown years ....
Elmer Gantry rides again Tough as Knight is ... my money would be on Brown to crawl out of that closet ... with a mouthful of jewels
I totally agree he should have kept up what was working but I also totally disagree that all pretty good coaches would not make that mistake in a big game. Watch the tourney this year, in 7 out of 10 games where a team has a lead of 6 points or more the coach will outcoach himself, take the team out of their offensive rithym and let the opponent back in. It happens ALL THE TIME!!!
Did Dale include a chapter on PROBATION? I bet that Dale's wonderful recruiting story of Lester Earl is left out of his revisionist history of LSU basketball. Maybe he can include a chapter or two on how to destroy a basketball program in the final 5 years of his career. How anyone can simply overlook Dale's last 5 years of his career as if it was just a minor detail is simply ignoring the truth. Dale Brown was a good but not great college basketball coach who severely tarnished his image in the last 5-6 years of his career with his total lack of recruiting which was culminated with the Lester Earl fiasco. Dale can keep his book and more than likely it will end up in the "bargain bin" at Books-A-Million next to Curley Hallman's failed effort. No thanks.
I used to love to listen to his radio show. Asked a question about his "freak defense" (which no one, including DB could seem to define or explain), he might soon be talking about climbing the Himalayas or the rain forests of South America or the reasons geese fly in formation. I think no one was happier to see him leave than Kentucky fans. Sorry things soured at the end. :bncry: He was a lot of fun for a while.
Dale might not have been the best coach but he was a great man and he stood up for his players no matter what, there's not too many of those left in sports. Well i read Dale's first 2 books and they were pretty insightful of his life, What is the name of his new book?
