totally agree, but i can't say i disagree with his evaluation of how Jefferson has just been anointed the starter without real competition.
Basically what we are seeing is a difference of opinion between the staff and the Garrett family. I am sure the staff said he would get a chance to compete and this is where the difference of opinion comes in. We will hear varying tales of the story from both sides. One thing is for certain. Garrett was receiving one-on-one time with Crowton last year and this spring during practice to work on his game so it wasn't like he was just stuck on the sidelines doing nothing. Even if you are promised a chance to compete during your recruitment you still have to come onto campus and earn the reps and not just going to be given what is not earned. Either way Garrett knew he wasn't going to pass up JJ or JL before the fall and that Zach Lee was coming in fighting for his spot. IMO, Garrett was even behind walk-on Bailey. Bailey is not an ordinary walk-on either. He was a 3* who turned down scholarship offers to come to LSU.
There was no chance in hell he was taking the top spot from either JJ or JL in 2010. None. If he couldn't, or wouldn't, accept that he'd get his shot down the road but not now, then he deserves to have his schollie pulled.
I guess I'll file Chris Garrett's 3rd-team practice performance away with Richard Murphy's Doak Walker award from spring football. Proof again, that forums/boards have no guage on who the coaches are really favoring at any point.
damn you got that right...... remember the thread about who should get the 2nd string reps? I was a mile off.
If this was the person/situation you were alluding to when you brought up the subject of Miles having lost the team, and the team was disguntled about certain things, then I can see why Miles and the staff made the decision to not continue his scholly. If CG was disgruntled and being a disruptive presence in the locker room then the decision to not continue his scholly is the correct decision. If the kid is upset because he was going to have to do his time, like every player, and sit at the 3rd spot until he gets his chance, then we really don't need him. If CG made the decision on his own, because he didn't want to sit in the #3 spot, with the possibility to never start given that Z Lee might be coming this fall, then there really isn't a whole lot Miles could do. I would bet Miles made a lot of promises to Z Lee to keep him committed. Promises that Miles will have to live up to, when you consider what is at stake for the kid. A gamble that could bite Miles in the ass, but a gamble that he and the coaching staff are willing to make. I am sure that this decision didn't come easy for Miles, but with the expected impact and talent that Z Lee could bring to the team CG would never see the field beyond that of a back up. A position I can see CG not willing to accept. The one saving thing for Miles is that he does have JJ and JL for 2 more seasons, giving them 1 season to groom ZL. Should ZL not turn out to be all that Miles will have time to recruit a couple of more QB's to fill the open spot. A gamble that is for sure, but one that I think Miles has to take for the future of the program. If it fails, though, it would more than likely spell his death.
I haven't seen him practice personally but I have heard he looks strong and poised. Not going to overtake JJ or JL but a formidable backup when needed.
if this is the case, this was not a kid being ignored. but you are right, a kid has to earn his spot, not have it handed to him. if he and his parents could not accept that, we are better off without him. i stand by my assertion that kind of attitude is what infects a team and causes problems. i do not know what the story is, but i put a lot of stock into bhelms information. he very rarely proves to be wrong.
There will be other scholarships pulled as LSU tries to make the 85 in August and to make room to sign 25 more in January. It's not a good situation for a third-stringer to get into the coach's doghouse.
