Who would you have rather had coaching us in those times. I would take the honest, clean, and amicable Cholly over the Bear and all his ill gotten national titles anyday. Just wanted to know what fellow LSU fans thought. I would also like to know what the Bamers who post here think.
On another board I visit there was a thread asking "What college or professional coach in history would you have wanted to play for? I put down that I have admired Tom Landry. Some wrote in that they wished they could have played for Bear Byrant. I compare Bear Bryant to the abusive father or husband where the family still "loves him" cause he is misunderstood or something like that when in realality they are a deadbeat. Give me Cholly Mac any day of the week.
If you loved Cholly Mac so much why did you fire him? I can still hear the chant "Help Mac Pack". I can see you hating a coach that went 16-4 against you. If Bryant was so abusive why do all his players love him so much? Must be that tough love. Might be because he continued to help them throughout their lives instead of tossing them aside when they no longer play for him. The main reason you don't like him is because he is something you could never have. I am sure to get several really good laughs from some of the replies to this thread. Just when I thought I could laugh no harder I am amazed again. By the way, I was a huge Cholly Mac fan.
.. Until Bama shows the world they can get something right, with out cheating that will be the response you will get. Bama has been running around with thier peckers in thier hand the last few years.
I didn't fire him, my Uncle coached with him and I knew him. I would take him any day, he was a very special person. I didn't know the Bear but I do know he had the respect of my uncle and Coach Mac, and thats good enough for me. Who do you really think LSU fans would choose? Kind of the same reason you would chose the Bear, right?
Everybody is forgetting that one of the biggest influences on the young McLendon's life was Bear Bryant when Mac was a player for him at Kentucky. Mac was the only one of Bryant's former players or assistants to beat him even once and Mac did it twice.
You are right. almost. There was a lot of respect between the two coaches. When Bryant was considering the AFL CCM was one of the coaches he considered good enough to follow him but also said Mac would never leave LSU. Mac did beat Bryant twice. Bryant said he taught his pupils everything they needed to know about how to win just not enough to beat himself. At one time Bryant had more former players in coaching than anyone else in the country. Gene Stallings beat him when Gene was at aTm in the 1967 Cotton Bowl. When Coach Stallings came over to see his former coach, Coach Bryant picked up Stallings and carried him off the field. Bryant truly did care about his players. Bryant also gave John Croyle a very large check so he could start his boys home for wayward boys "The Big Oak Ranch". Yep Bryant sure was a bad guy. But I can understand loving Cholly Mac, I loved him too. What I can't understand is trying to drag down one of the greatest coaches in college football just to make you feel good. How pathetic.
