The College Football news has posted a list of the top 100 college players in America. http://www.collegefootballnews.com/2003/Features/100_Best_Players_of_2003.htm Lavalais in in the top 10. "8. DL Chad Lavalais, Jr. LSU Lavalais was the focal point of the best defense in America. The Tigers blitzed, blitzed and blitzed again confident that Lavalais would clean anything up that the rest of the D missed. Offenses had to spend so much time deal with him that it allowed the other Tiger stars to shine." Clayton, Webster and Mauck are also listed. Peterman and Wilkerson are conspicuous by their absence.
Four in the top 100...With one-Mauck-not even on some people's SEC Top 100 player lists... The ascension was as astonishing as it was complete...
He is listed ahead of some very talented people. It's awesome for a defensive lineman to get that much attention in the media.
I WISH Lavalais was a Junior. He was clearly the lynchpin in a defense that played aggressively, dominated most teams, and had almost no weaknesses. I have been watching LSU DL's since John Sage and Ronnie Estay. We have had many, many excellent DL's. However, I can't remember any one that made as many momentum-shifting plays at key points of the game as we have seen Chad Lavalais make this year. With all due respect to the many fine DL's who preceeded Lavalais in the purple and gold, I think he is the best I have ever seen in a Tiger uniform.
