Good Morning LSU Fans, Great win yesterday!!!!!!! Quick question- Was Cecil The Diesel Collins a starter along with Kevin Faulk, or did Cecil replace Kevin after an injury? Or is there an entirely different story? My daughter and her husband are having this debate in Houston last night, I told her when she called me I would try to get the straight story. Thanks in advance
Cecil started for Kevin because of injury. The Diesel started off his career with a great game then began making regular trips to prison and it was all down hill from there. So much talent, what a waste.
Faulk started Game 1 against Texas-El Paso. I believe he got hurt late in the game. He scored a couple of touchdowns. Cecil Collins did not play. I believe he was disciplined for this game. The second game against Miss. State, Rondell Mealy started & scored 2 touchdowns, but Cecil played a lot & rushed for 172 yards in his very first LSU game. In the 3rd game against Auburn, Cecil started his very first time. Kevin Faulk was still hurt & did not play. Cecil gained 232 yards & score his first 2 TD's for LSU. In the 4th game against Akron Cecil started & rushed for 179 yards & 1 TD, Mealy rushed for over 100 yds, & late in the game Faulk came in for his first action since he got hurt. Now here is the interesting dilemma that DiNardo had. The 5th game against Vandy, he started his returning all-American, Kevin Faulk, even though the Deisel was leading the nation in rushing at the time. However it was the only time that DiNardo was in this fix, since in the Vandy game Cecil Collins broke his leg. It was the last time Collins would ever play for the tigers. Discipline problems did him in. Faulk started the remainder of the regular season games. Interestingly enough, Faulk was hurt for the Independence Bowl game against Notre Dame & Mealy rushed for 222 yards as he was the hero. So we had 3 superstar running backs that year that all started at different times. But....it sure was fun watching the Deisel while it lasted. Some of this comes from my memery, but most from the 1998 football media guide.
But there's the new generation. Broussard, Vincent and Edwards will do it the right way. As free men.
