I got the chance to go to both scrimmages this fall. I've kept my mouth shut on the board for the most b/c I realize LSU closes them for a reason. But after hearing some info on the radio today discussing practice I thought a little information was warranted. Rather than discuss a whole lot of whose runnings with the 1's & the 2's I thought some info on just how players looked would be sufficient..with added flavor where necessary. You can't get a feel for how good or bad the team is going to be from these scrimmages. 1) B/c each side knows what the other is doing and 2) the 1's play the 2's so you don't get the best against the best. We can do some Q&A also, to some extent. So here goes: 1) Ally Broussard should be very good. He looks like a bigger Toefield. Saw him run over several people. I would think he would get plenty of PT. 2) That leads to Addai. He will not un-seat Addai. JA looks awesome. 3) A. Mayes - A physical specimen. Playing LB and oddly enough the gunner on punts (just a strange combo, LB and Gunner). Eric Alexander and him look almost like twins in physical stature....with Mayes a little bigger. Oh, EA is the other LB 4) Based on what I saw. Nick Child will not RS. 5) I didn't get to see A. Hill b/c he was hurt already. But C. Davis and D. Bowe look good. If A. Hill looked the best before them then look out. B/c those 2 guys looked very good. 6) QB - Tough to evaluate. this is one area where you can't really get a feel. Yes, guys throw int's but the D knows what you are running. Yes, they stand in the pocket but they can't be hit. So hard to evaluate. I though all of them looked good at times and bad at times. 7) Clayton - He will play D. Every down? No. Every series? Possibly or even probably. there are tons of other things I saw but these are the ones that came to mind off the top.
From what I have heard about Alley Broussard maybe he and Addai can be a great 1-2 combo the way the Toe and DD were. How did Barrington Edwards look?
Edwards looked good too. He and Vincent had very similar running styles. Just my guess, he would probably red-shirt out of lack of necessity.....nothing against him, let's just preserve him. As for 1-2 with Addai and Broussard, I guess that's possible. But I got the feeling it was Addai's all the way and would come out only when he got tired..........he really looks good. he looks to reallly have strengthened and bulked up. I can see this though, 3 or 4th and 1.......bring in Broussard.......I don't think you can make him go backwards.
The combinations at LB seem to change a lot. Who are currently running with the first team? Is Turner still the starting MLB? Is he a quiet guy (lead by example) or more of a vocal leader?
Barring injury to an RB, I completely agree on Edwards. There's no reason to waste a year of eligibility if he would only play if the game was well in-hand.
LB's were: 1's: Alexander, Turner, Mayes 2's: Vaughn, Ledoux, Peterson As for, vocal leaders you can't tell. Just for guys who looked like they were leaders by the way they acted: Mauck stood out alot in that aspect, Lavalais too.
I hoped Kenny Hollis had the stuff to challenge for linebacker right away. He had a fine record coming out of JC--5 stars. And he sure as hell looks like a linebacker. I guess it takes time.
