A vehicle at 15 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 800 gallons a year of gasoline. A vehicle at 25 mpg and 12,000 miles per year uses 480 gallons a year. So, the average clunker transaction will reduce US gasoline consumption by 320 gallons per year. They claim 700,000 vehicles – so that's 224 million gallons / year. A barrel of oil contains 42 gallons of oil.&nb sp; After refining, it makes about 19.5 gallons of gasoline. That 224 million gallons of gasoline requires about 11.5 million barrels of oil we will save. 11 million barrels of oil is about 1/2 of one day's US consumption. And, 11.5 million barrels of oil costs about $862 million dollars at $75/bbl. So, all of us tax payers contributed $3 BILLION to save $862 million. How good a deal was that ??? Must be Obama Logic! They'll probably do a BETTER job with health care though!! Yeah! Right! GOOD LUCK...... Not authored by SabanFan. SabanFan does not vouch for it's authenticity. At least you posted the one with the correct numbers. The first circulation of this had so many math errors it wasn't even funny.
The final figure is per year so as long as every single one of those 700,000 cars make it through at least 4 years we should come out on top. Sigh.
The only thing that the "cash for clunkers" program was to give a temporary boost to the auto makers. More for Toyota and Honda than for GM, Ford or Chrysler. Some people made the decision to buy now instead of waiting 3 months, 6 months or a year. Now that the program is over I'm sure the auto industry will experience the same problems it was facing before the program
Only problem is that the other 22.5 gallons is not waste. It is used to produce many other products which actually have a value greater than the 19.5 gallons of gasoline produced. Still not saying that this was a good investment, if all that you are concerned with is the dollar figure, but in the end it was a much closer to the line program than this email shows.
IMO, Cash for Clunkers showed that the government cannot administer their way out of a wet paper bag*. This simple program was very poorly run. A lot of dealers are still trying to get their money. *You younguns may want to google "paper bag" if you don't know what that is.
