http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/07/19/scotus.main/index.html I really like this guy because Planned Parenthood, Naral and other murd...I mean abortion rights groups hate him. I saw him speak at a pro-life ralley a few years ago. He has actively being working on overturning Roe V wade for a long time now. He is also pro gun and very much a capitalist. Awesome nomination.
At this early stage, this looks like an absolutely outstanding nomination. The guy has a phenomenal pedigree and sterling reputation as a constitutional lawyer. I look forward to learning more about him, and am thoroughly relieved Gonzalez wasn't the pick.
Gonzales will come in when Renquist gives it up. He may even come in as Chief Justice. Bush has all but signalled it. But that only replaces a conservative with a conservative. O'Connor's currently moderate chair is the critical swing vote. I don't know enough about Roberts, yet, but it is a good thing that Bush didn't nominate one of the radical right wing neoconservative judges. Roberts will probably pass Democratic muster. He has been a conservative lawyer with a short 2-year judical career with nothing controversial to shoot at. Conservatives hope he steps up to the plate as a firm conservative judge. Liberals hope that he finds that being a strict adherent to the constitution makes him more moderate, as it did with conservative appointments Suter and O'Connor. According to NPR this morning, he is a personable fellow well-known in Washington with friends on both sides of Congress. And remarkably few enemies. This is probably as moderate a candidate as anybody expected from Bush. Congress will give him the usual grilling on controversial issues, and Roberts will give the usual evasive responses and will likely be confirmed. Then we wait and see.
I like this guy because he won't allow french "freedom?" fry eaters on our mass transit system and will punish them accordingly. /we're doomed /don't think the american public got off so easy on Gonzales, Bush wanted to ease into him as the next appointee like Red said
I don't see it happening. Although Bush would love to appoint the first hispanic to the Court, he'll be under a tremendous amount of pressure to appoint a woman. There is only one woman on the Court right now (Ginsburg, a liberal). I think Bush got a pass on the woman issue this time because he went out and nominated a highly qualified individual (IMHO). The reason many people view Gonzalez as a logical pick is his friedship with Bush. However, Edith Brown Clement fills that role AND she is a woman. She's shaky on the abortion issue, but I think in the end she'll be the pick to replace Rehnquist. Clarence Thomas will be the next Cheif Justice if Rehnquist retires. He's Bush's dream come true on the Court, and the pick will soothe anyone calling for another minority on the Court.
