http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/10/31/scotus.bush/index.html I don't know much about this guy but if he is ideologically similar to Scalia then I will like him. The big democrats in the Senate have already come out swinging against this guy, which is another good sign, and seem ready to fight.
Well, he has been described as a "staunch" conservative which doesn't bother me as long as he is not a ideologue. When some of his rulings are published, I will be interested in what they indicate. So far I have heard nothing I would consider a red-flag, but I haven't hear much. A radical right-wing administration like this one is just not going to appoint a true moderate, the Democrats know that. If Alito is perceived to be judicial in his rulings with respect for the Constitution and judicial precedents he will likely pass muster. If he is perceived to be "Scalia Light", there will be problems. He can stand on the right but his challenge is to appear to be leaning to the middle, not further to the right. But it important to understand that 17% of this country is Liberal, 38% is Conservative and the 45% majority are Moderates. The political parties once fought for the middle and tugged it gently to the right or the left. Now they are both controlled by their extreme elements and have neglected the Moderates, who do not have an established party and are feeling very unrepresented right now. On top of this, the only Moderate on the Supreme Court has retired and will possibly be replaced by a staunch Conservative. This may backfire on the Republicans in 2008 when they will try to woo the moderates to the right. If the moderates believe that the only way to get a moderate voice on the Supreme Court is to elect Democrats . . . they may do just that.
A brilliant Bush Sr. nominee... I'm undecided on Alito, but am greatly encouraged it's not Gonzalez, AND that the President didn't feel compelled/forced to go the minority route (for minority sake.) Don't get me wrong, I have no problem w/ a female or minority nomination (other than Gonzalez) but also don't like the impression that a selection is BECAUSE they're a minority.
And when you talk, nobody listens. Is there anything you support wholeheartedly? Or do you just like to complain?
Well, I wasn't really taking issue with what you said, just wondering if you have ever found anything not to complain about it. But, since you brought it up, you seem to be the kneeler here. You've apparently developed a taste for the media kool aid. Considering the alternatives to Bush, I am quite satisfied with his administration.
We agree on that. I'm not happy with Bush, but I'd vote for him 10 out of 10 times against the likes of Kerry and Gore.
