FRIDAY, 7pm: Brown @ LSU (televised on CST) SATURDAY, 2:00pm: Brown v. Nicholls SATURDAY, 6:30pm: Brown @ LSU SUNDAY, 11:00am: Nicholls v. Brown SUNDAY, 3:00pm: Nicholls @ LSU (televised on CST) comments from Brown coaches: "we will have our hands full...It's a great place to open, we went there three years ago and both the fans and the venue are tremendous. Its one of the best atmospheres in college baseball." "It will be a great experience for many of the players...I tell them to try and get a W. It does not matter who you play. Do the best you can every time you put on a uniform." "The team has gotten a lot stronger (this season). We are really eager for the first game," Franco said, adding that the squad’s conditioning has been much harder than in the past. "Every season our top goal is to win the league...The key difference between this year’s team and last year’s is the talent and depth -- we definitely have players that are capable of attaining All-Ivy honors" coach Mainieri: "We're expecting a real challenge this weekend against Brown...Brown has a veteran club that will compete hard with every pitch." Brown returns all four of their top hitters: .328 in 2012 (45-of-137) -- sophomore infielder Nick Fornaca (#8), who was rated 9 out of 10 as a recruit by Perfect Game (9 grade - Potential top 10 round pick and/or highest level college prospect) .318 in 2012 (41-of-129) -- senior infielder Cody Slaughter (#5), who was rated 8.5 of 10 as a recruit by Perfect Game (8 grade - Potential draft pick and/or excellent college prospect) .315 in 2012 (35-of-111) -- senior OF John Sheridan (#12), who (along with LSU's Raph Rhymes) was just named one of 30 finalists for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award. Sheridan is also Brown's only big base-stealing threat, going 12-of-16 in stolen bases last season .311 in 2012 (52-of-167) -- sophomore OF Will Marcal (#28) Slaughter and Marcal accounted for 10 of Brown's 21 home runs last season with 5 a piece. C Wes Van Boom, #23 (how about that for a name?), also returns for Brown, and he also had 5 home runs for Brown last season. The three accounted for 15 of Brown's 21 home runs last season and were top 3 on the team last year in slugging pct. (.496, .479, .456), with Fornaca and Sheridan finishing #4 and #5 (.438, .432) Brown has had 7 players drafted since 2001 (RHP, C, C, 2B, SS, OF, OF) Brown has two new assistant coaches this year, one to coach their infielders, and one to coach their outfielders. One of them (Grant Achilles) coached seven hitters that got drafted in his last three years at Georgetown and Wake Forest. The other new Brown coach (Mike McCormack) coached four hitters that got drafted in his last four years at St. Mary's College of California. Browns head coach on the two new coaches: "We are extremely fortunate to have Grant...he has a great reputation of working with hitters and infielders...I believe that he is going to do great things here." "(Mike) is going to take the outfielders and help Grant with the hitters, and I think, between the two of them, our position players are in great hands. I'm looking forward to working with both of them."
