I recently read a thread talking and speculating about Bowl payouts within the SEC. I recently found this that sheds some light on the situation. This example is from when LSU played in the Nokia Sugar Bowl in 2004 (National Championship for 2003 season). http://www.lsu.edu/lsutoday/031219/pageone.html
The bowl payouts really need to be changed to where only the teams that go to bowls share in the profit. Does Vandy or Kentucky really deserve the amount of money they get from the other teams in our conference going to bowl games.
Tough call here... One way to look at it though is that those bowl payouts being distributed to the Vandy's and Kentucky's of the SEC help keep those teams football programs going and thus helps keep the conference intact.
Yes. It is in all SEC's schools best interest to elevate the caliber of our league from top to bottom. There might be a way to tie some of the funds to an incentive, like being bowl eligible, but at the end of the day the SEC bowl tie ins allow maximum funds to all SEC school programs. We are on top now, but there were some years that we were near the cellar. The money this year to Miss St will certainly help them build themselves back up. Just my $.02
I agree going both ways. Maybe the teams that are not bowl eligible should only get half of the payout that bowl eligible teams get or something. I'm all for the advancement of the SEC but after LSU pays for all the crap that they needed for the SB, they weren't getting all that much more than all the rest of the teams in the SEC. He who does not work, does not get (as many) scholarships...
The money situation seems to be more important than the competition. Most of the fellow Georgia fans that I've talked with don't like the fact that we will be playing #17 ranked Wisconsin over #5 ranked Texas. Tennessee is at #15 and probably won't improve if they lose to Auburn again. Georgia at #7 should be playing #5 Texas Tennessee at # 15 should be playing #17 Wisconsin I'm disappointed that we are not playing the best competition available. And with South Carolina not accepting a bowl bid, is that not taking money out of the pot? Do they deserve to share in the total SEC take?
I understand on the outside it does not appear LSU got their fair share last year, but if you look at what LSU would have earned over the last 10 years with sharing and without sharing I think we are better off. Last year alone LSU made over $1 million dollars on licensed material. LSU is now ranked at the 9th or 10th most popular college football team in the country. That is due to last year’s success and will translate into more dollars for LSU.
Touche...Good point. I understand what yall are saying but we are on the top right now and I can't help but be selfish. I have an uncontrollable bias for LSU... :thumb:
Shaq, The more i think about it you may be on to something... $14 million last year, $5.1 million this year, **** that is almost $20 million. Maybe we should become a little more greedy
