So much for ****wits like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity who said the Clintons would do whatever they could to keep Kerry out of the White House.

He should get a cheesesteak sandwich while he's there. I've never been, but I hear they make 'em good in Philly. And he also ought to go check out the Rocky statue and run the steps, just like Rock did. I'd also go see the Liberty Bell and try to check out an Eagles game if they are in town.

JS, I know for a fact they're two different people...Crawfish is a Democrat, but not in the traditional sense, just like any Louisiana Democrat...

Lots of people in this state grew up Democrats because their parents did. Their parents did because Republicans were the party of the "CustomHouse Republicans" of Reconstruction. Those days were dark ones for this state, and from the time when the government abandoned the South & Reconstruction in 1876, the populace never forgotten...

It was often said that the Republicans statewide could caucus inside of a telephone booth...But you don't ever need to p!ss them off, since anytime a Republican took the Whitehouse, you could be looking at a US Attorney or high political patronage position holder in Louisiana.

Remember Longites and Anti-Longites? Those were Democrats...both sides of that aisle.

The tide of Democratic dominance in Louisiana was not stemmed until Edwards rewrote the Constitution in '72, and basically did away with our primary election system and reinstituted the open primary system. He was tired of having to slug it out against his own party members, only to emerge weary from a party primary against a well rested and well heeled (and nicely financed) Republican challenger who used out of state money and the charges that stuck in the primary's against Edwards...

It allowed Republicans to run without fear and right along with the big boys. It forced the money from DC in early, and it really instituted the end of Democratic dominance in state party politics.

Now, many people are Democrats because their grandparents were. The registrar in some parishes (My own included) threatened to tell your parents if you tried to Register Republican...

Having said that, the Democratic party on the state level is a much different animal than the national one. How else can Blanco be a solid Democrat while espousing her Catholic focus of Pro-Life? Landrieu whores herself out as a liberal in Washington if you ask most Louisianians who see and here (like she did tonight on Hannity & Colmes), but in Washington, they laugh at her when she says they call her liberal back home. She's one of the most conservative Democrats in the Senate (not as much as Breaux was, but she is right of the mainstream left there).

Being a Democrat in this state does not hold the same meaning as if you were a Democrat in New York, Massachusetts, or California. We do it because Republicans were the party of Reconstruction, carpetbaggers, and oppression for most throughout the South (Especially in New Orleans and the "Custom House" horror stories). That's why they all used to vote Democrat in the "Solid South".

The Democratic Party has sold the South out now, so while many hold on to old idealogical positions and the label of Democrat on a local level, but they vote Republican almost exclusively on a national level...

We need to get past this and learn to understand how the past dictates this interesting hypocrisy...

The old habits die hard, TE. I'm an Independent now, but back in 1984, when I was 18 and registered to vote for the first time, I was the first member of my family to register Republican. You should have heard the hue and cry over THAT. :nope: :nope: :nope:

Yeah...I registered Independent myself when I was 18...We did it in HS at Denham in the brand new cafeteria...and I remember distinctly principal Lloyd Wax emphasizing, "Please mark DEMOCRAT....or one of the other choices..."

I marked Registered Independent, and remain one today...

Partly because I voted against Suzanne Haik I Don't have a Brain Terrel for Senate even though I knew that I'd be voting for someone in Landrieu I don't necessarily agree with on most issues.

She puts the state first in terms of economic development (The Airport & The Millenium Port, which Blanco has basically left for dead, much to Houston's chagrin) and actually votes her own concscience (perhaps her party's conscience). She didn't campaign by saying that she'd vote "whatever way President Bush tells me to"...

That was stupid, and Suzie Terrell is a snake in the grass who lied to the public at every turn...and this is VERIFIABLE FACT.

Even though I hold her in such contempt, I agree with most philosophies of Republicans and the right of center political theory prevalent in today's society. So being an independent, I have the freedom to do either/or.

TE, I am aware of Post Civil war history, I grew up in Crowley, LA. and moved to H, Burg, MS. during college years. It is no different in MS., if not worse. However, I registered a democrat, but not because of my parents. I did because most of the small local candidates here in MS. all still run on the democratic ticket, for reasons stated in your post. I vote however and for whomever I feel. Usually that's republican.
