The fish sandwich at McDonalds is awsome.......... I really have no clue but it seems as if some of these guys are giving out some great info........no doubt you will find some of the best food in the world on your trip.
Boycott Tom Fitzmorris and his message board. He backed down on the Melee at Marisol! What a coward. I still like Don's on Vets between Clearview and Transcontinental. My favorite seafood restaurant is GW Fins down in the Quarter. Web address: http://www.gwfins.com/ It's expensive, but I've yet to find better grilled seafood. The best cajun, and it's reasonably priced is Brigtsen's. Check their early bird specials. I would recommend this restaurant above all others if you want true New Orleans cooking without paying Emeril prices. http://www.brigtsens.com/ It's in uptown, so you'll have to get a street car down St. Charles if you don't have a car. Don't get a taxi! The ride there is one of the best things to do in NOLA. For sushi, the best places are Shogun on Vets near Causeway, Japon on St. Charles, and Ninja near Carrolton and St. Charles.
for an excellent Lunch try Salvo's on the west bank, Belle Chase. It's a cafe type place but the fried shrimp Po Boys and gumbo are Tres' Bonne. ( very good )
Also, be SURE to go by Bucknell's fruit stand in Belle Chase and get some Satsuma's if your from WAY out of Nawlins. I heard they are really sweet this year and they only grow south of the big easy. I'm having a friend of mine ship me a box next week. They're in season right now.
A couple of comments on the restaurants submitted - 1) Deanies - Has gone WAY down hill since the late 80's. Not what it used to be. You used to get A LOT of food and they seemed to change the cooking oil much more often back then. 2) R&O's. Used to have the best soft shell crab poboy in New Orleans. No longer. Like Deanie's, it seems to be a crap shoot. If you luck out and get a new batch of cooking oil, you're O.K. Unfortunately, they don't seem to change the cooking oil as much as they used to and you can TELL. Seems to have followed the Deanie's model for success. 3) If you're out in that area (Bucktown), I'd go to New Orleans Seafood and Spirits. 4) Uglesich's - Never been there. I'll have to try it based upon this string. 5) Galatoire's - You can NEVER go wrong with Galatoire's. EXTREMELY pricey - but you DO get what you pay for. The BIGGEST PROBLEM is getting in. They're FINALLY taking reservations (for only the upstairs, I believe), but I'd be making them NOW. Getting in the ground floor (MUCH BETTER ATMOSPHERE) is EXTREMELY HARD when there's nothing in town. During Sugar Gras, you might want to camp out. 6) For inexpensive seafood, I found a new place in St. Bernard called Crabbie J's. Small, dank, but REALLY GOOD seafood. It's on Judge Perez in Arabi. Well worth the ride.
LSU, what's the deal with Tom F. and Marisol? BTW, got to agree with you about GWFinn's. Hope you don't have any problem with this URL chowhound.com Cut and paste then follow page to New Orleans.
Agreed. Avoid Deannie's at all costs. I've been three times in the past 7 years. Each time it was bad and got worse. I remember eating there as a child in the mid-80's, and it was great. But no longer. I also remember when the Ralph and Kacoo's on Vets next to the 17th St Canal was great, but it too has declined. If you want a cheap and convenient poboy in Metairie or on the Westbank, go to Danny & Clyde gas stations. One of my favorite fried shrimp poboys in the city.
DRAGO'S CHARBROILED OYSTERS !!!!!!!! This place is in Metairie, and has the best Oysters and Lobster in town. Be prepared for a little wait, because like R&Os, its where the locals go. If you have never tried Charbroiled Oysters, be prepared for a religious experience ! I'm not really a Oyster lover, but i'll eat em charbroiled all day.
Avoid Fitzmorris' favorite oysters. I hate Drago's! I've eaten the oysters there twice and got sick both times. I'd rather eat at Red Lobster (gasp) than Drago's. If you're in that neck of the woods, go Italian, either Andrea's or Impastato's (best homemade pasta in the city). Regarding Fatzmorris: Tom gave Janis (co-owner of Marisol) a rating she thought was unfair (still one of the top ratings in the city), so she called him to discuss it. She said that he should not have judged her restaurant without eating there. He of course said that he ate there. She then said it was a lie. She said she most assuredly would have noticed him eating there because she works there every day all day, and it's a small restaurant. She had her employees go through receipts, and as she expected, he did not eat there. That's when the challenge was posed. Tom said I bet $5000 for the charity of the winner's choice that I can get into your restaurant and out without you noticing before Jan 1. 2004 (the challenge was back in July). Janis, much to Tom's disbelief, accepted the bet. The next day, after people hounded him about it on the radio show and on his message board and other food message boards, Tom said the whole bet was silly, and he was calling it off. Janis called him back and said something like, "I knew someone with your girth couldn't get in." Tom hung up on her, and that was the last I heard. He's still occassionally made fun of for it. This was how it was billed: THE GAUNTLET HAS BEEN LAID! The challenge: Tom says he can eat at Marisols without being noticed by management there. Marisols says it cannot be done. What's on the line: Loser has promised to donate a four digit figure to a local charity. Vegas odds: 50:1 in favor of Marisols management. The trash talk: Marisols: "It is almost impossible for someone with your girth to eat at our restaurant unnoticed." Fitzmorris: "You're no friend of mine...Your restaurant is uncomfortable." Fitzmorris-Marisols 2003: BE THERE!
Regarding "Danny & Clyde's" .. they were the unwitting source of one of the funniest things I ever saw on television. Back in the mid 80s on the annual fundraiser auction for WYES (New Orleans public TV), some local character named Jay Carlo Ditta was the auctioneer for some West Bank things that he had rounded up. In his thick, nasal accent he said, "Da nex item up fo' bid is a sack o' ten inch po-boys from Danny and Clyde's." The station then flashed up a picture of two guys in aprons standing out front of the restaurant. Ditta then ad libbed. "Ya gotta be kiddin'. Look at dese two guys. Dey couldn't come up wit' ten inches between da two of 'em!" The station manager could be seen vaguely out of focus in the background behind Ditta, his mouth hanging to the floor! A classic. Haven't been to Deanie's or R&O in a long time but am sad to hear of their lesser qualities. How about Sid-Mar's in Bucktown? Good seafood, good po-boys and stuffed artichokes. And as earlier mentioned ... Middendorf's in Manchac. Ohhhhh yehhhhhh.
