OK, i started the Best Burger thread 5 1/2 years ago and its still active. I don't expect this one to last nearly as long but where do they sell the besst dogs? About 6 months ago I ate a chili dog at Chicago Al's Hot Dog Stand on O'Neal Lane in BR and it was pretty good. A couple of months ago the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile was in front of Matherne's Supermarket on Highland Rd and a couple of women were selling chili dogs from a Coca Cola portable stand to raise money for some school. Two dogs and a Coke for $5 and they were great. The chili was wonderful, which in my opinion makes or breaks a chili dog. The chili dogs I had at Wrigley Field a few years ago were the best I have ever eaten in a sports stadium. Most of the ballparks and stadiums I have been in don"t offer chili at all. Last week I bought some Hebrew National weiners and made my own. Even though I just used canned Hormel chili they were still great. The weiners tasted like the ones I remember them tasting when I was a kid. Some convienience stores used to have pretty good dogs but now they all suck. Exxon's On The Run, Circle K and most of the rest must all buy that generic tasting chili from the same place. You know what I'm talking about: that crap where they put a bag of chili in a machine and you push a button to make it come out. Where can I get a great chili dog? where
Hands down the best Chili Dog around: Mrs. Story's Dairy Bar, Opelika, Al Open Mon-Wed 10am-9pm and Thurs-Sat 10am-10pm. 1900 Pepperell Pkwy. This local favorite opened in 1952. They only serve hotdogs and ice cream. Milkshakes, flurries and banana splits are included in the ice cream category. The hotdogs are made of beef and pork. The dogs are boiled and the buns are steamed. You have a choice of a regular dog or a foot-long one. The dogs come with mustard, ketchup and chili. They will put onions on your dog, but only if you request them. They were out of onions the day I visited. I got a regular dog and another one with mustard, ketchup, chili and slaw. Both of my dogs were very good. I also had a small, the only size they have for the milkshakes, vanilla. My shake was also very good. Mrs. Story's Dairy Bar is third generation family owned and operated. i was in houston this past weekend and noticed that they have a Coney Island Hot Dog fast food restaurant. Didn't stop and eat there, has anyone tried this place out?
Some of the supermarket delis have a good chili dog, but there just ain't a good hot dog place in BR that I'm aware of. Sonic serves a chili dog but they take no pride in it. Those convenience store chili dogs are horrible. Frostop serves a chili dog that is OK. Der Weinersnitzel does not make good hot dogs. Chicago Al once served a good hot dog, but I never go downtown much anymore. I never cared for the over-dressed Chicago-style hot dog anyway, with lettuce and tomatoes and dill pickle spears falling out of it.. I mainly like the humble chili dog (chili and diced onions, no friggin' cheese) and the classic ballpark dog (yellow mustard and sweet relish) and sometimes I really like a Kraut Dog (brown mustard and sauerkraut). Mostly I make my own. Traveling around the country, I like the slaw dogs in the Carolina/Georgia area. In the Chesapeake area they make something called a half-smoke which is like a cross between a weenie and a smoked sausage and its good. I ate at Skooby's in Los Angeles once and they made a hot dog with grilled onions and sauerkraut--very tasty. In New Mexico, you can get green chili as well as red chili on your hot dog. Green chili is often hotter than the red.
I used to love weinershnitzel. Definitely better than sonic imo. I went to that stand on O'neal and wasn't overly impressed.
Normally, I buy them from albertson's but I had the real thing at the Miami Airport. Only place I've seen a nathan's hot dog stand. They were even better than the ones I boil at home.
When I was at LSU I used to stop at weinersnitzel after a night of drinking and would usually get 3 chili dogs if I had any money left. If did that now it would probably kill me.
