No, Arkansas did. I edited my post. 2006 was the year. And Michigan's only loss that year was to Ohio State, before USC. see post #8
Ok, but Arky was clearly not the best of the SEC that year (we proved that when we beat them), nor was Nebraska from the Big 12. The ND thing is a joke. Right, making Ohio St the best team from the Big 10.
So using your logic, the "best" team may not be the one playing for and/or winning the conference- which is what I alluded to earlier in this thread. I'm talking about beating conference "bests", not "champions", per se. It's my fault that I botched my initial post and had to edit but you've missed the line of thought because of it.
The OP all cited teams that would be objectively recognized as conference champions, not the perception of another fanbase trying to make their team more accomplished than they really are.
Well the OP titled the thread otherwise but tell me how he was objective again? Was it by recognizing an Oklahoma State team as a conference champion when they haven't even played their conference championship game yet? Or was it the West Vigrinia team sitting with the same conference record as a Louisville team with the same record, that they lost to...and a game left to play? Not to mention if Oregon loses tonight Stanford would have a better conference record than them.
I did mean best = conference (not division) champions. WVU won a share of their conference championship last night. Whether they get the BCS rights to it depends on Cinci getting a win. For OSU I did state they would have to beat OU for us to even have a shot at them, which would make them conference champions. And if Oregon loses to UCLA I think Nike U might just all kill themselves.
Then show me which one of these statements is "objective"? I think I've clearly made my case btw. There's that "perception" again. We're playing under that assumption now and I was showing how EVEN those are subjective, but wasn't questioning what you said, per se. Contained told me WE (LSU) were the best one year when we didn't even play in the championship game. I do agree with him and was pointing out how "fan perception" was what this was based on to a huge degree.
. That's actually not what I meant. I think the Fla was the best team in the SEC that year, but we were better than the team that you were claiming was the best because we beat them fair and square.
The answer is YES! It is very impressive. Is it unique? I do not know. But LSU's record this year is exceptional.
