Sure, serious BCS teams do not commit 5 turnovers and 10-plus penalties a game, but let's assume the players all of a sudden cut down on this foolishness and win out for two reasons-(1) I'm an LSU fan and naturally hope to win out and (2) winning and watching teams ahead of us fall the last month of the 2003 season was great fun...and I'd love to do it again in 2005. I know the first batch of BCS numbers come out tomorrow, but here's my focus for today: Miami. I know we still have a ways to go, so my initial focus is on Miami, with a slightly wider focus on ACC teams that are threats-Fla St, and of course Va Tech. At a glance, it looks like LSU fans should hope for one of the following two scenarios: Miami win over Va Tech, Miami loss in ACC title game to a 2 loss Fla St (second loss comes in finale in Gainsville). Va Tech win over Miami and ACC title game loss (to anyone other than a 1 loss Fla St, which I suspect could still jump LSU with a win over a then-second ranked in the BCS Va Tech team...unless LSU wins over a still-undefeated Georgia). -Texas simply won't lose to anyone remaining on the sched...except for A&M. That game is at Kyle Field, and now that I date an Aggie, I might have to make that my first trip for a game...especially if you're down to 2 undefeateds going into that game with LSU the highest-ranked 1-loss. -Should Va Tech go undefeated, they'll blow the doors off of Texas in the BCS, and Mack Brown won't be able to do a damn thing about it, either. They still have to play/potentially play *three* top 10 teams--BC (who'll be top 10 after next week), Miami, and possibly Florida St. It comes down to a much better ACC and a down Big XII, simple as that. (PS-What a great race it woulda been down the stretch b/w an undefeated LSU and an undefeated Va Tech. LSU still potentially has games against three top 15 teams (assumes we win out, as does Georgia). It would have been thisclose...and both would have jumped undefeated Texas with ease. Heck, an undefeated Georgia still may jump an undefeated Texas. How great is that=Mack wins what was recognized--until yesterday in South Bend---as the toughest inter-regional, non-conf game of the season for a contending team, runs the table...and finishes *fourth* in the BCS for his troubles. Who says the football gods have no sense of humor?)
With the amount of TO's, penalties and the tendancy to let teams hang in there when we should be putting them away we better be talking Auburn and save the BCS talk until later.
