wow... how many times is this going to be brought up?? I don't like the idea....solely because what happens if you clearly have the top 2 teams both undefeated at the end of the season. Like say Va. Tech, Bama, and UCLA all end up losing. Clearly the game should be Texas vs USC and you don't need the extra game.
Well, what if there's only one undefeated team? Or if there's three? This boils down to making arbitrary limits - in college basketball, college baseball, college football (other than Div. I-A), etc., there are established limits to the number of teams that are allowed to participate in the post-season playoff system, leading to an eventual champion. With Div. I-A, the limit is currently 2 teams, decided each year by a different system (sometimes there's a strength of schedule, sometimes you get quality win points, sometimes this poll counts then it doesn't, etc.). What most fans want is an expansion of the current limit of only two teams, because there's a greater chance that the method of choosing those teams will get it wrong. If the limit is raised to four, there's a much better chance that the best team will make it into the playoffs - ideally we'd have even more than 4, in my opinion - maybe 6-10, using first-round byes as needed to make the number of games needed to be more manageable. But 4 is much better than 2, just for the simple fact that historically the selection of only 2 teams has produced controversy - sure, maybe this year or some future year there will be two teams that stand head and shoulders above all of the other teams, but you know what? They shouldn't have any problems beating the number 3 or 4 teams then, and they get more playing time, more national exposure, more revenue, etc. while doing it.
i agree but it is the only system that will work. It is not fair for a team to go undefeated in the sec and not have a shot to go to the nc. +1 is the only answer, the bcs does not work.
What if we have two undefeated NFL teams ... wanna skip the playoffs and just have the super bowl? You can make that argument in every sport. There are some years that one or two teams are clearly the best, but yet they still have playoffs. I'll never understand why people view college football so differently...
You make a very good point, but in my opinion if they are going to try and make a "mini playoff" (4 teams) thats just not enough. I say if you're going to do it, do it right..... why not extend it to 8 teams? People say that the bowls bring in to much money? well we can still have ALL the bowls. The big bowls (BCS, Capital, Cotton, Outback, etc) can be part of the playoffs and the rest can just be regular post season bowl games, kinda like the NIT!!
