You can really tell how the Auburn - LSU rivalry has intensified in recent years. Despite Auburn's entertaining Mississippi State and LSU traveling to USC this weekend, threads on boards of both teams continue to appear concerning the AU - LSU contest. That has pretty much been the case all season.
My thoughts after watching LSU-USC LSU did an impressive job of stopping USC's primary rushing attack. It was clear that LSU's defensive front was superior to USC's offensive front.....and just as impressive that LSU's pass blocking looked solid. That being said, several LSU posters on this board have expressed that they expect to have similar results with AU. Unfortunately, they vastly underestimate the AU Defense which, IMHO, is the top overall D in the conference, just barely ahead of LSU and UGA. But here's the key.....as a run defense, against the run, they are decidely better than both LSU and UGA. Don't believe me? Just ask UT and Arkie if the two "Cedricks" feel the same way as they did prior to their games. The one-dimensional Bengals won't be as exciting as the two-dimensional variety that has been having it's way with the likes of South Carolina and La. Monroe. Still, LSU's pass protection will help keep it a very close, low-scoring game. Looking forward to a great game, a great tailgate, and a great time visiting in BR. I'll stick by my earlier predictions in this post.
Re: My thoughts after watching LSU-USC I don't think anyone here predicted similar results. No one expects that AU will have less than 100 yards. I would be suprised and dismayed if they had 200. I think that LSU fans are just happy to see a team that has had success running the ball get completely dominated by our D. We have not faced a team with ANY running game whatso ever this season and were concerned about it. Now we are not as concerned. But, I said this before the FL game... we won't know if we can stop the run until the AU game. But I feel more confident now that the AU game will prove that we can. I don't think that the key for AU is their run defense. I think that their key is the pass rush. LSU has protected Mauck very very very well this year. This is the best pass blocking that I have seen in years. If you don't pressure Mauck, I think LSU will win. Our offense may have turned a corner. We shall see!
I would agree with you, except that LSU has not yet shown it can cope well when their running game is quashed. Again, most of the penalties for LSU were against UGA & UF, two teams that severely limited LSU's running attack. JMHO, but I believe the frustration and pressure created in limiting an opponent to a one-dimensional attack can be debilitating (see AU-vs-USC or AU-vs-GT) for a QB. Mauck is prone to interceptions and I believe turnovers will be the number one factor in the outcome of this contest. LSU's pass protection has indeed been exceptional. It's doubtful, but would not surprise me to see Chizik switch to an occasional 3-4 scheme to further confuse Mauck at times. He was known to do this when DC at UCF, but has not used it much since his arrival at AU. I will say this......Mauck's breakaway runs last night showed impressive "escapability" and should give AU one more thing to prepare for that they didn't have before. WDE & Geaux Tigers
What is the deal with all this Mauck throws INTs all the time crap?!? He has a better TD to INT ratio than Campbell does!
Not singling out Mauck, just making the point that the risk is greater due to the greater need to throw in a one-dimensional situation. A QB with a 50% ratio with 25 attempts per game is at greater risk for a turnover than a QB with 55% ratio with only 10 attempts per game.
Yah but if we can slow down the AU running game and force JC to throw than look who will be throwing more INTs then! Mauck is a much better QB than JC at this point in time.
I just have one thing to say!!! We will find out on the field come Saturday night and i for one will be rooting for the true Tigers. The LSU Tigers. Eagles are becoming extinct. And if you let that eagle any where near Mike The Tiger you will be witness on how long it takes for a tiger to kill a bird and have a big smile on his face. It will be war dead eagle. He he Geaux Tigers
