Besides Jimbo, where are the big name assistant coaches? Everyone is so anti-assistant coach, have they forgotten that Bob Stoops was an assistant coach with no HC experience before he took over a terrible Oklahoma program. Petrino was a lifelong assistant just two years ago. We are all so hell bent on having someone who is a HC, when history has proved that a smart mind can do a lot at a school with a large talent base and fertile recruiting grounds. Just a thought, and no I am not on the Jimbo bandwagon. ldskule:
You just answered your own question "he took over a terrible Oklahoma program." LSU is one season removed from a national championship not a terrible program begging for someone to turn the ship around. LSU should be rolling the dice with up and coming college assistants only if the search really turns sour.
My point being is that there are excellent assistant coaches in the college ranks that are just waiting for an opportunity. Think if Bob Stoops didn't have to turn OU around first.
Then he probably never would have had the chance. Most up and coming assistants have to start with a program during a down period or go to a smaller team to earn their stripes. It isn't often that an up and coming assistant is given the keys to a cadillac usually they start off with a pinto. JMO
I would really like LSU to hire an assistant if things fall through with Del Rio and Petrino. I would be very excited about: Romeo Crennel, Mike Nolan, Gary Kubiak, Jim Johnson, Monte Kiffin, Gunther Cunningham, Mike Zimmer, Jim Schwartz, Dick LeBeau, Mike Trgovac, Larry Marmie, Mike Smith, Al Saunders, Greg Knapp, Scott Linehan, Tom Moore, or Brad Childress. Who do you like out of these assistants?
