"Nick Saban could have gotten it done his way if Michigan State had been a little more attentive to his needs. Tom Izzo is eminently likeable, a terrific coach and the perfect ambassador for Michigan State, but if they'd have fussed over Saban half as much as they do over Izzo, they'd have never let him escape to LSU.

Bobby Williams was an unmitigated disaster, a shining example of a guy elevated to his level of incompetence. He was a terrific recruiter and, by most accounts, a marginal position coach who was out of his element as a decision-maker and a leader.

They're still paying for the Williams era in East Lansing. Smith will do well to milk a .500 season out of a team with little depth and few upperclassmen worth the NFL's attention."
