Their 2 toughest opponents (A&M and NC) were both at home. 6 of their 11 opponents were absolute cupcakes with BCS rankings of #76 or worse.
I love the type offense that they run (shotgun option), but I'm not sure how successful it would be against defenses with better speed. Also not sure how well there defense would do against a major conference offense. I think they're a legit top 15 team, but top 5 is saying alot.
I ain't buying! A team like Utah, or even Bosie State, may be able hang with one of the big boys in a bowl game. They'll be fired up to prove a point and have a month to prepare. But, put them in a conference like the SEC where they have to face stiff competition week in and week out, and they would wilt in a hurry. They have some talent on their starting units, but not enough depth to survive a long season.
I don't like teams that score score score and have marginal defenses (Boise State being an even worse example). That is Utah in a nutshell. They stand a very good chance of losing their bowl game, even to Pittsburgh.
Based on their present schedule and who they've played, it's very obvious that they are an extremely good offensive team. The hype they are getting is well deserved, but I still question what their record would be if stuck in one of the major BCS conferences. I personally would give them no less than 2 losses.
This is my exact argument if USC wins the Orange Bowl (Sorry to interject a USC blast in this post- my disgust for them knows no bounds). Not to say that they're not talented or do not have depth. I just think that if they played in any other BCS conferece (other than the Big Least) that they would have at least one loss.
against a solid defense with speed at the DE positions, Meyer's offense would get heavily disrupted. Doubtful if it could survive in the SEC, and that's the main reason UF would be making a mistake by bringing Meyer to Gatorland... :thumb:
In the BCS game, Utah will play Pitt. I am not sure that really solves any of our questions. Pitt's D is far from great.
