Quite possibly. But the SETI people are looking at a very broad band of radiation. We may be able to detect the presence of a signal that we are unable to fully assess.
I find it interesting that out of the 15 (at the time of this post) that voted, all believe in life in some form or another, except maybe Martin who at least seems open to the possibility if more evidence exist. I wonder if the folks who voted they believe for reasons other than the probability factor had some sort of experience; whether just a UFO sighting or something else. There's a town near where I live on the MS Gulf Coast that gained national notoriety in the 70's when 2 men who were fishing and claimed to be abducted by aliens. Both men were fairly reputable and both passed drug and lie detector tests. What gives the story a little more credibility is the night before, at least 15 people, including 2 police officers reported seeing a UFO in nearby St. Tammany parish. Now I'm not saying that I necessarily believe what they say happened, but I keep an open mind about it (maybe it's because I'm a scifi geek ); especially since after thirty-plus years, both guys still testify to the same story, and have never wavered in their account of what happened. There's been too many other similiar occurrances for them all to be hoaxes, nut jobs, or coincidences. The truth is out there....
I think they could mostly be hoaxes, nut jobs, and coincidences while the rest are optical illusions, misunderstood natural phenomena, and hallucinations induced by drugs, suggestion, or mania. Until there is evidence of visits by aliens, I remain skeptical. There are literally thousands of different alien craft reported, thousands of different alien beings described and hundreds of abduction scenarios existing. This either suggests that there are thousands of alien civilizations covertly messing with our stuff, or . . . that people simply have vivid imaginations.
how many hoaxes and coincidences do you think it takes for them no longer to be hoaxes? what are scientists setting the hoax/reality threshold at these days?
I think there is life else ware in the universe. It really boggles the mind to think about the true scope of the universe and to think what was there before the universe began. To me, it kind of reinforces the belief that there is a God. Someone who has no beginning or end. though the universe started billions of years ago, space has been here forever.
I always heard it was 102,434, but that number could be higher or lower. I'm beginning to think you're not big into statistics or probabilities.
i think red said it pretty well we dont really need evidence as long as we have lunatics, beer and imaginations in large enough numbers? this is what passes for probabilities these days? there are few arguments with more counterexamples. you want billions of examples of people who are contacted and communicating with beings who arent there? look around. imagining something is a minor trick for a human brain. for that we actually have evidence. for aliens, not so much. if you really must believe in aliens, you might want to consider claiming it based on personal faith, because you are not gonna get very far with the zero bits of evidence we have.
My mom's uncle is probably the most famous guy in the history of UFO mania. He was sane until he investigated the crash site of what was likely a classified aircraft and spoke to the media about it. The military then made him take pictures with some old weather balloon and say that is what he found. This happened about 60 years ago in a town called Roswell.
I do believe in intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. As for people who claim to be abducted, I don't necessarily believe them although I'm open to that possibility. The bottom line is no one knows for 100% certainty. Not even you. :thumb:
of course, that is why the only thing i have said is that any conclusions are based on nothing. claims of knowledge about the subject are unscientific, totally untestable. we might as well get a random number generator and take turns reading off strings of numbers to each other.
