LEXINGTON, Kentucky (AP) -- Reminiscent of Carol Burnett wearing her drapes and curtain rod, a mentally challenged teenager who advanced to high school upon the largesse of social promotions is suing her school district for barring her from the prom last spring because she was wore a dress styled from the only fabric she could find in her double-wide. http://www.cnn.com/2004/EDUCATION/12/22/confederate.prom.dress.ap/index.html
So are you assuming that she is 'retarded' and 'mentally challenged' because she wanted to wear a confederate flag dress?
Best part of the article: "Her only dance for her senior prom was on the sidewalk to a song playing on the radio," said her lawyer, Earl-Ray Neal.
#1 I saw no mention of Mental Retardation #2 Maybe if it would have been green yellow and black it would have been accecpted Yanks 1 Halftime Rebels 0
If a black man had showed up in a "Black Panther" getup, would that have been acceptable? How about full Swahili garb? If an Indian girl would have shown up in a sari, is that OK? If a German native showed up in full dress greens with swastika armbands, would that have been OK?
sorry rex, the conservative crew is right on this one. flags arent evil. symbolism over substance. shutting people up because you are politically correct only makes things worse for everyone. even if you hate this chick, sending her home only gives her a cause and a story on cnn. but i would take her side more if she was prettier.
many members of my family have down's syndrome (including my mother) and i am offended that you associate people like her with this teenage racist. rex, please be sensitive. please think of the retards.
No, the conservatives are not correct in this case. The US Supreme Court has stated in 3 separate cases, Tinker (1969), Bethel (1986), and Kuhlmeier (1988) that a school district has the right to curtail activities that have the potential for significant disruption, and that a student's right to speech in a school is not as expansive as that of an adult. The girl obviously wanted her 15 minutes of fame.
