@Bengal B @red55 Part of the "Target: Patton" author's argument is that his information indicated that at least 5 reports on the damaging collision had been forwarded to the National Archives, but when he began researching the book, he found that all were missing.

If Patton had gotten his way, we would more likely lose all of Western Europe. Don't believe your American history books. The United States did not defeat Germany. The Soviet Union defeated Germany in five long hard years of bitter warfare on an unprecedented scale and was not about to meekly go home. We jumped in in the last year of the war and raced across France into Germany 9 months just to stake out some easy turf while the main battle was going on in the East. Their nation had been devastated, they beat their enemy, and they were ready to keep fighting to keep it. We were not. Our homeland was untouched and we took 3% of the casualties that the Soviets took. We became the most powerful country on earth at almost no cost in terms of national infrastructure and little cost in American lives. We won everything that we wanted or needed. Every bit of it. We were not desperate, the Russians were.

And . . . if you remember . . . we won the Cold War. Again with no cost to our national infrastructure and almost no casualties. And Eastern Europe is ours, the Soviets suffered economic collapse, revolution and loss of their vast continental empire. Everything worked to our benefit. Everything.

Come to think of it, Patton's warmongering was a huge problem that probably needed to be eliminated in the best interests of the United States of America. And that will remain long classified along with all the dirty little secrets that help protect us from our enemies.

Can you imagine war hawk Patton retired and running for President in the McCarthy era? Pretty damned scary. Think Harry Truman would lose any sleep over Patton having an accident? McArthur was lucky he got away with his ass intact

Hey, not to derail the thread any further, but Bengal B's question about FOIA reminded me.....anyone see the story about the Battle of New Orleans document today? A researcher found written orders to General Pakenham in the British Archives, ordering him to take New Orleans whether a peace treaty was signed or not. Historians tell us the battle was insignificant because it occurred after the war officially ended.....this indicates GB had colonial designs on Louisiana. Wonder how our history might be different had he succeeded?

Not really. I'm a notorious conspiracy debunker, actually. But I haven't read the books. When I do, I will no doubt find holes in their theories. It is 90% certain that it was an accident as far as I know. But it is not a stretch to say that Patton had enemies in high places.

As long as we're derailing, I offer the supreme evidence that America won the Cold War. The Red Army Choir was first formed in Stalinist Russia in 1939 to glorify the revolutionary ideal and lift the morale of the Soviet People Army.

    Comrades be happy.

Their pompous and imperialistic attitude towards driving the wrong side of the road. They are a pain in the ass to work with, their diet sucks, their beer sucks, they drink hot tea AND they are red coats. The list is long and distinguished, but I do not want to bore you.

Their beer most definitely does not suck - Newcastle, Fullers, Samuel Smith, and others are great. I also like Old Speckled Hen...

There is something wrong with people who choose to drink their beer warm. I've had Newcastle and I like it. Cold
