Gaynell (Gus) Tinsley was LSU's first consensus All-Amercan, an end who played in the mid-30's and then went on to an All-Pro career in the NFL (with, I believe, the Chicago Bears). When his pro career ended, he returned to LSU to replace Bernie Moore as the HC of the Fighting Tigers...the only alumnus other than Jerry Stovall to coach LSU. He coached the "Cinderella Tigers" the only other time LSU played Oklahoma, a 35-0 loss in the 1950 Sugar Bowl. He was fired at the end of the 1954 season and replaced by Paul Dietzel. He spent his later years teaching math at Tara High School in Baton Rouge, and passed away just within the last year or so.
wow, I know remember a story about that time from an article around here....... Some ex LSU players were on a roof watching OU practice before that game and got arrested or something.
