Very enlightening info on Joe Dean's radio show in New Orleans on Thursday 7/31. Dean said that when Gerry DiNardo was fired in November 1999, LSU's Chancellor, Mark Emmert, received a telephone call at home to discuss the coaching vacancy. The caller was Coach Tom Tuberville of Auburn, who was then (it was thought) preparing to play Alabama at Jordan-Hare. Emmert passed the inquiry along to AD Dean, who then contacted Tubby's agent. After a couple of days of secret discussions, SEC Commish Kramer got wind, and called Dean to say a move like this would be bad for the conference, on the heels of the bad blood a year earlier when Tubby bolted Ole Miss. Based on Kramer's request, Dean ended pursuit of Tubby. But Tubby's agent mentioned another coach he represented who was also available to a high bidder, Nick Saban, and LSU ended up hiring Saban. This says a lot about Tubby's loyalties, and indicates we have him to thank for LSU finding Saban. Dean admitted on the radio that he had never before disclosed these details. And he said he's ecstatic this unfolded as it did, for LSU would not otherwise have known about the availability of Nick Saban. One phone call from Tubby, and LSU ends up with Nick Saban. Thanks, Coach. Joe Dean's previous 2 hires at LSU had been Curly Hallman and Gerry DiNardo.
I do remember Tuberville wanting the job. It was in the papers that he was interested. One article had him saying that the job was Sabans if he wanted it.
Nick and The Tube are both represented by the same agent for sure, that's been reported. Jimmy Sexton in Memphis. This could be a true story. Sexton shops both of these guys around all of the time. It's his job. That's why Nick doesn't have to deal with all of these overtures from Notre Dame, NFL etc. Sexton deals with them. This was the story at the time. It is compatible: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/inside_game/magazine/football/college/news/1999/12/07/cf1213/
Joe "String Music" Dean was allowed to participate in the seach and interviewing process as a courtesy to the outgoing AD but Chancellor Emmert held all the cards and made all the decisions.
Lord Ole Miss to Auburn and then to LSU. You know how many more people would hate him if had done that? I'm glad it didn't happen.
OK FightinTIGER Before this gets out of hand, the cigars where in '99, DiNardo was still here in 99, Saban was hired at the end of the 99 season after we beat Arkansas. So just lay that one to rest.
Yeah, let's get "into that" again, Brother. LET'S ....................................................... We'll watch Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns round the clock before THE OCT 25 showdown. I'll be chewin and smokin' those patented "Eastwood Chomparillos" waitin' for Auburn & Tubby's "MOANIN' TIME". LSU needs to run up the score on these mongrels and assist Mr. Tubberville in his journey to another coaching post ... in Peru Tubberville needs to be staked out NEAR an ant hill and slathered with honey. The, his CIGAR lit and an LSU flag driven into the ant hill. Retribution ... Unforgiven style
I am sure LSU look at him, but we can all be VERY VERY thankful it did not happen. Auburn got their man and we got ours... Hes their problem now with his stunning 31-20 record and 1-2 record so far.. If Tubby was our coach I might have done the same thing I did Clinton was elected. Just pretent it didn't happen and stick my face in the sand...
