I know thats a question that is begging for sarcastic comments, but i would like some serious answers as well. Are they going to be able to keep their program? Also, I am wondering about their enrollment numbers. Should they keep their program, will they be able to maintain their d-1a status?

I know thats a question that is begging for sarcastic comments, but i would like some serious answers as well. Are they going to be able to keep their program? My guess would be yes. I think Cowen is more devoted to athletics than many of their own fans realize. One Tulane grad I know thinks that a lot of the talk a few years ago about down-grading the program was a move to get Alumni and supporters to open their pockets and give more. And I think it worked. I know from talking to a Tulane baseball also season ticket holder I know, Cowen is at most of the baseball games supporting the team.

Also, I am wondering about their enrollment numbers. Should they keep their program, will they be able to maintain their d-1a status? Again, I say yes. I think that they may struggle with enrollment numbers for a while, but I also think that the NCAA will cut them some slack to try to recover. It would be a huge PR nightmare for the NCAA not to give the University time to recover from a natural disaster the magnitude of Katrina.

As far as their classification goes, that is determined by paid attendance. I forget what the minimum average required per game is.

I tthink it's 15,000 per home game avg. Tulane could always do like UL-M did. They're gonna play a "home" game against Arkansas, in Arkansas. Even though there will be 50,000 plus hogs there, the attendance will be counted as a ULM home game.

Nah, not determined by school size at all....

As an outsider looking in, I can't imagine how Tulane keeps this program afloat.

Taking monies that could go to things like keeping the university as a whole solvent just to field a football team that, frankly, wasn't all that well supported in the stands before the storm hit seems very strange.

Nothing says they can't try to resurrect the progam in the future as SMU once did, but to try and do so now seems silly, IMO.

read an article somewhere that they will have a meeting this month to determine what programs will be dropped (most temporarily).

I heard on a NO TV station over the weekend there will be a meeting soon to discuss the future of the program. Tulane's athletic department is in shambles having lost a boat load of money and spent a lot of money. Realistic possibility of the program being shut down for a couple of years until the TU athletic department is fiscally stable enough to handle the return of the program.

correct, dec 7th is the meeting day. Not an athletics meeting, it is university wide, with the red pen out drawing lines through programs. Dickson (the AD) will be there before the board to make his pitch.

Rumors go from complete disbanding of athletics to no cuts. Complete disbanding of all programs is possible because of Title IX issues that cant be relaxed without an act of the U.S. Congress (even baseball could be cut because they would have to provide 9.5 or whatever female scholarships also)....what a joke. fockin broads.

---revision---apparently they HAVE been granted a 5 year window to become compliant with Title IX. Supposedly ARE going to continue with D-1 football, baseball, mens/womens basketball. Nothing else.
