Just got this in my e-mail.. Gee, why red? Why not red and blue? They're both colors of our country, but only red reflects Republican electoral victory in a state. Hahaha ok before everyone get's all worked up, I'm not completely serious. But I am getting very fed up with these guilt trip emails...'pass this on if you love Jesus', 'pass this on if you respect life', 'do this if you don't hate the troops', 'wear this and do that if you want to conform to the narrow definition of a good person provided by this message'. Since when are troop supporters the 'silent majority'? Majority? Yes. Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians, etc, all support the troops, contrary to the oversimplified, emotional categorization adered to by some. I think there are very few Americans who actually don't support the troops. But silent? Hardly. First of all, how many vehicles do you see everyday with the yellow ribbons on them? Secondly, this description is a feeble attempt to insinuate that the 'protesters' don't support the troops. There are two things wrong with that line of thinking: 1) Protesters support the troops as much as anybody. Their belief is that the troops should be kept out of harms way unless absolutely necessary. 2) If you are in agreement with the governments policies and actions, you have nothing to protest, thus rendering yourself somewhat 'silent'. However, political polarization has become so brutal in this country, that the supporters now protest the protesters, and now everybody's screaming at somebody. So even if you are foolish enough to believe that those against the war don't support the troops, there would still be no case to classify yourself as 'silent'.
Absolutely. I don't support the troops, AIDS patients, breast cancer (or any cancer) patients, orphaned children, MIA/POW troops, or anything to do with Tibet. Well, at least I don't think I do, since I think all the ribbons are goofy and contrived.
Wow...I can't believe I'm saying this, but for once, CC, I agree with you. I hate getting that trash in my inbox of "Pass this on and something good will happen to you" and whatnot. My mom sends me that crap daily. At the same time, I see nothing wrong with somebody just trying to rally some more support for the troops. Sure everyone supports them in their own way, but a united front is always nice. Will it actually happen? Doubt it. Troop supporters the silent majority (again, just to be clear, I'm disagreeing with the article)? Maybe during the Vietnam War, but now, I hardly think so. I've got many friends who are completely against this war but show the utmost respect for those in the military, which, to tell you the truth, is really all that matters, I think. At the same time, I think that supporting the troops also means sending care packages, contributing to charity funds, etc. Something that can directly benefit those in the Armed Forces as opposed to just putting a magnet on your car. Sometimes I think people say they support the troops just to say it. Then you have idiots like that loser from Syracuse with the Forsake the Troops website. I hear he tried to fake his own death by claiming two members of the military beat him to death. And to think some poor woman married that fruitcake.
this sort of protest has a long history. when the founding fathers wanted to protest something they would all color coordinate their pantaloons.
