AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION The ABA was founded on August 21, 1878, in Saratoga Springs, New York, by 100 lawyers from 21 states. Prior to that, lawyers were generally sole practitioners who had trained as apprentices. Today, a dangerous de facto Brotherhood of Juris Doctors makes up what may very well be America’s most powerful faction.
