"Nearly six in 10 Americans want to see U.S. troops leave Iraq either immediately or within a year, and more would rather have Congress running U.S. policy in the conflict than President Bush, according to a CNN poll out Tuesday.

Though support for Bush's decision to dispatch additional troops to Iraq grew to 37 percent -- up from 32 percent in a mid-January poll -- a slim majority of 52 percent say Congress should block funding for the new deployment.

The CNN poll was conducted Friday through Sunday by Opinion Research Corp. Pollsters interviewed 1,027 adults for the survey, which had a sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

    Story Highlights

Fifty-two percent say Congress should block funds for new deployment
So-called "surge" remains unpopular, but opposition has lessened a bit
Twenty-one percent support an immediate Iraq pullout"

I don't post much anymore, but this topic really pisses me off. Not directed at you, mac, just in general.

The most gutless and ill-conceived idea about the whole Iraq war is the notion that congress can stop it by cutting off funding. Whether you agree with the war or not, all cutting funding would do is hurt the troops on the ground over there. Makes me want to puke to hear politicos talk about cutting off funds , but still say "But I support the troops".:angryfire

If you want to stop the war, bring them home. If you want them to stay over there, give them what they need to fight. There are no half measures.

No way we can cut off funding. Either get out or stay in, politics aside.

It does not matter. You cannot manage a war with polls.

It's not meant to "manage the war" It's meant to show the opinion of the general public.

    No kidding.

The "general public" doesn't know squat. They (we) are all kool aid drinkers.

I'm curious about your name. It sounds mighty hawkish for such a wimpy attitude.

Even if the "general public" didn't know squat it's the "general public" that puts the people who run the country in office. So the "general public's" opinion does matter.

It's a nickname for the way I atak the boards :hihi:

It matters to politicians which is why Bush is forging ahead with his strategy. He ain't running for office so he has no need to kow tow to the idiots.

    Why the "911"?

He's hurting his party. Look at the MT Elections.

Don't really know. Made this name 10 years ago when I had an AOL account and stuck with it.

By my numbers about (at least) 65% of the American public is borderline retarded, so I'm happy to see people coming around on this issue.

Let's leave a power vacuum in a country surrounded by Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Afghanistan because we don't like Republicans. Goooood idea there, mensa.

It's amazing to see a country completely devoid of any sort of critical thinking. The reasons why we went to war do not matter anymore. What matters is the outcome. How can anyone support instant defeat? Oh, politics. Nevermind.
