Official says 5/8 rule has outlived use

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division I Management Council voted unanimously Monday to repeal a rule on scholarship limits in basketball and replace it with one that rewards teams for overall academic performance.

The current rule allows schools to offer five scholarships in one year or eight in two years, but it penalizes schools -- no matter how well they've done historically -- by not allowing them to replace scholarship players who become academically ineligible, NCAA president Myles Brand said.

One of the proposals the Management Council will present to the NCAA Board of Directors later this month would set a team threshold for triggering a penalty, such as the loss of a scholarship.

The exact numbers would be determined later.

More info on the rule change. It looks like if the rule is officially rescinded LSU may be able to pick up another player or two. I count only 8 guys on scholarship currently on the LSU roster. Add in the 3 signees from this year and that leaves 2 more available scholarships LSU would have before reaching the max of 13.

College coaches estimate that at least 200 players will benefit if the NCAA's board of directors endorses the management council's decision Monday to rescind the five-and-eight scholarship rule.

The present rule limits NCAA Division I men's basketball programs to a maximum five scholarships in a given recruiting class and no more than eight in two consecutive seasons.

The management council unanimously endorsed rescinding the rule immediately so that it could include the class of 2004. But the board of directors, a coalition of NCAA presidents, is the only legislative body that can make new rules. They meet next week.

If the rule is overturned, college coaches can start signing more players before the end of the month-long spring signing period in mid-May, provided they don't eclipse the 13-scholarship maximum per roster.

Thank God! That was the most idiotic rule that truly hurt a program and makes recruiting next to impossible.

Great, Brady could have signed 2 more losers to run off. Rule will take place next year.

Obviously you are such a great fan that you can call guys who want to come and play for LSU "losers". Its fine if you hate Brady, but to call an 18 year old who signs with LSU a "loser" shows a lack of class and has no place at LSU.

OK, well then I guess we'll just refer to JueMichael Young, Shawnson Johnson, Tony Gipson, Jaime Lloreda, and Spencer Ford losers...

Fine upstanding citizens like Lamont Roland were high quality individuals of great moral fiber and character, too (I'm BEGGING someone to actually agree with that statement)...

Of course, how can we forget the ones that Brady actually labels losers, like Thomas Davis after the UGA game...

We'll just refer to those 6 or 7 John Brady recruits losers...Just those SIX OR SEVEN...Not a lot at all...LOL!
