I've been watching youtube vids of our past glories; including all 6 of our baseball National Championships and am particularly impressed by the 1997 team. I always knew they were a great team, but a closer examination reveals just how awesome they were. In addition to winning the 2nd of back to back CWS's, that team only lost 13 games on the year, while winning 57! Inexplicably though, 3 of those 13 losses were to UNO (4-6), NE Louisiana (2-6), and SW Louisiana (8-10). I get that sh!t happens in baseball, but those are all games we win 99x out of 100. So in reality, they cudda/shudda/wudda been 60-10 on the year, which is just phenomenal. I'm not even sure if its ever been done. On top of all that, they hit an NCAA record 188 HRs in those 70 games! Granted, that was with aluminum bats, but still, every team was allowed to use them, so it's not like it was an uneven playing field. With the changes made to the bats now, that's a record that we can honestly say will never be broken. Anyway, the point I'm trying to make in all of this is that, given all of this, I believe the '97 team is one of the greatest college baseball teams of all time. The 1993 NC team was a personal favorite of mine. Maybe not the best ever, but they were so fun to watch. The semi-final game with the comeback in the 9th inning to reach the championship game and wax Wichita State was epic.
Warren Morris's home run in the bottom of the 9th with 2 out and 2 on still takes the cake for the best CWS championship game ever. I don't know how you beat that game at any level. Add in the fact that he had surgery on his hand earlier that season and that was his first homerun of the season as well. That play possibly put LSU down as one of the most watched baseball programs in the country. i talked to guys all over and when you ask them what team you want to see make it to the CWS they will tell you LSU. Fans in Omaha love our tradition and our food. We have the greatest fan base in college sports and we make an immediate impact where ever we go. Kind of like Tiger Woods is to golf LSU is to College Baseball. The game would not be the same had Skipper not left Miami for LSU to build one of the most forcefull most powerful baseball programs in the country.
Fun fact: every member of the '97 team who had an official at-bat that season hit at least one home run.
I would have to agree with the 97 team, but 2000 was great, as well. That 2009 team was pretty stacked, too. Imagine what guys like Blake Dean would have done with 1997 bats.
