1. 2. The 10-year War
In 1968, Ohio State crushed Michigan 50-14 en route to the national title. The Buckeyes got to 50 points with a touchdown and a late two-point conversion. Asked why he went for two in a game that was already a rout, Hayes replied famously, “Because they wouldn’t let me go for three.” A year later a former Hayes assistant, Bo Schembechler, led Michigan to a stunning 21-12 upset in Ann Arbor, ending No. 1 Ohio State’s 22-game winning streak and hopes of a second-straight national title. The Michigan upset was the beginning of what became known as the 10-year War, epitomizing not only one of sports’ greatest rivalries but a personal battle between two men, Hayes and Schembechler, a one-time Ohio State assistant. From 1969-78, Michigan held a slim 5-4-1 edge over Ohio State. During those years, one school or the other claimed or shared the Big Ten title, finishing as co-champions with each other six times.

  2. UUUUmmmm, The I couldn't go for three comment makes a great story and brings laughs, but it is Urban legend. Lou Holtz actually said it as he was an ass't coach on that team.

Also, the 1969 Upset of the Century (as SI called it) was actually 24-12.
