I'm fairly certain that shutting down Guantanimo doesn't mean that they are going to be set free. It's like saying if they shut down Angola then they have to let everyone go.
The press has been saying all day, that Bush would have shut it down long ago if there was a good option! They discussed the alternatives, no one seems to agree.. thus, todays' actions, are probably more for campaign promises (fulfilled), with little weight behind it for sometime. No easy solutions.. As the REP Leader said today, should you have a solution before you declare it closed? READY, FIRE AIM! Management... I worked under one of those before...didn't last long
Bush would have shut it down once he realized the damage it was doing to America's reputation, and the lack of effectiveness of the program, but if he did it himself he would have appeared to be weak or indecisive. That was a Bush trait; once he made a decision, he stuck to it, good or bad. Some of you think that this would be a travesty to try them in the American courts, and soft on the terrorists, but could you imagine the brick that Habib would lay in his pants once he steps foot into Angola or San Qeuntin? Also, the order is to shut it down within a year. They'll find something to do with these guys.
good political move for obama. all he is doing is closing the prison as the base will remain open. the detainees to be released were going to be released anyhow. most of those that will remain in prison will do so in the US. the others can hopefully be returned to sender and hung in their own state. its a symbolic thing. changes nothing strategically.
Maybe I could help. I say give them all a new set of clothes (American Military Uniforms should be good). Give them all a weapon( No ammo). Open the gates, and send them across the mountains. Tell them how the Cuban army will welcome them with open arms. Problem solved.
How bout we dress them up like Rabbi's and parachute them back into Taliban controlled Afghanistan? "Here's your boys back!"
