The situation at Syracuse is pretty straightforward. SU hired an incompetent athletic director in Daryl Gross who has been an absolute flaming disaster at Syracuse University. The mess created by Greg Robinson is entirely on Gross, and he knows it. Giving up on Robinson after three years is a public admission of both their failures, something that is already recognized in private among SU faithful. Gross proclaimed Robinson a defensive genius, a boast that over the last three seasons has clearly transformed Robinson into the Brian Billick of college football. A defensive genius whose defense stinks every season? You can’t make this stuff up.
Take Syracuse’s last game of the season, a contest against Cincinnati in the Carrier Dome, where the Orange fell to the Bearcats in a defensive struggle, 52-31. Greg Robinson’s defense yielded 544 yards. In fact, in ten games against BCS conference opponents this season, the SU defense allowed opponents to score 39.0 points-per-game on average. Passing, running, big plays, small plays - the simple truth is that the SU defense stunk along with the offense. Guess who the defensive coordinator is? You guessed it. The genius himself, Greg Robinson.
So, before I run the risk of beating a dead horse, let me summarize why Daryl Gross and Greg Robinson should have been the ones fired, instead of Brian White.
(1) Greg Robinson made the decision to adopt the West Coast offense just as teams throughout the country were flocking away from the tired Bill Walsh system in favor of the spread offense or power running game. That decision alone set the program back several years and had a dramatic effect on recruiting. Need further proof? Reference Bill Callahan at Nebraska, a school that like Syracuse won 7-10 games per year, every year, with an option-based offense. Need even more proof? The Denver Broncos, upon which Robinson’s offensive system is based, are one of the worst offensive teams in the NFL.
(2) Recruiting on the offensive side of the ball has clearly outperformed recruiting on defense. A quick glance at the roster will quickly lead you to the conclusion that all the premier talent on the Syracuse squad, if there actually is any, resides on offense. Delone Carter, Doug Hogue, Mike Williams, Patrick Shadle and Taj Smith all appear to have an NFL future.
(3) Daryl Gross and Greg Robinson, with their rose-colored glasses, have lost the respect of the community. They fail to see, or are in complete denial, that they arrived at Syracuse and promptly made lemonade back into lemons. It can be argued, and backed up with very hard evidence, that the SU basketball, football and lacrosse programs are ALL weaker right now than they have been in the past thirty years.
FACT: Syracuse basketball has not won an NCAA tournament game with Daryl Gross as the athletic director.
FACT: Not only did the SU Lacrosse Final Four streak come to an end under Gross’ reign, but they did not even make the NCAA tournament last year.
FACT: Only twice in history has the Syracuse football program lost ten games in a season. Gross and Robinson are fully responsible for both disasters.
FACT: Basketball and football attendance are at their lowest levels since the Carrier Dome opened in 1980.
