Dont forget the L.A. kid who was shot and killed at his front door as a result of what people are saying is a battle between blacks and mexicans in the city. It really is terrible to hear, especially these kids who are killed when they are not supposed to be in harms way. Sad, sad stuff..... As for the "surrounded by ghetto" comment, Gardere doesnt border the campus, the south isnt great though it is largely "college housing" but not really ghetto, the west is bordered by some tiny river, the east is a pretty nice community, and the west...well it is a ghetto. But 1/4 doesnt make a location surrounded, so I completely disagree. No because then whomever we "gave up" our pistols to will rob all of us blind.
anything north of aster street is pretty shady until you get around the bridge but even thats such a low density area, its nothing to really fear. just be smart about it. but, the LSU shooting and now the UNC shooting seem pretty random. from what i hear, Durham isn't exactly the best area in the world
durham is a dump, as are the students in that city. but this girl was killed in one of the nicest college neighborhoods in chapel hill. it is like the lake beau pre area.
OMG Highland road is SO rough. So is downtown. I'm lucky to get to campus without a Maltov cocktail being thrown at me. On a serious note, I will say that I agree. And it's not just colleges. I've been keeping up with the shootings going on in the country every day (just by periodically checking my phone for news) and it really seems that in the last month there have been an inordinate amount of shootings in schools, at Wendy's etc. Two campuses were put in lockdown on the SAME DAY last week, Appy State and someone else, when shooters were spotted. Locally, BRCC had two people with guns in class last week, as well as a bomb threat. It's really sad.
Now that is funny. I used to live on Alaska Ln there and that was a pretty rough neighborhood, down by the tennis courts, past the neighborhood rec center. But hell it wasnt the ghetto. We should define ghetto, seriously. Crime happens everywhere. If you want to see real ghettos go to S. Africa and to some of these other countries to see a real ghetto. But these shootings are getting outrageous, the guy who shot up the Wendys in florida, I cant tell you how many times I have been to that Wendys.
You've actually BEEN to that Wendy's, Mastermind? That would absolutely freak me out. The area north of campus @ LSU has been the 'hood for years (since before I went to LSU in '88.) When I was a senior, a freshman was shot and killed in the parking lot of Kirby Smith. It was a random act of violence, not unlike the apartment murder in December. I also remember the serial killer who terrorized Gainesville, killing a number of U of Florida co-eds around 1990. There were also several rapes on campus @ LSU when I was a student. My point is: there have been crimes commited around college campuses for years. However, there does seem to be a spike. I've thought, for a long time, that people simply don't seem to have as much respect for others as, perhaps, they once did. Respect for life, respect for authority, you name it.
Yep, I was in school at that time too. Truly a shame, think it was a carjacking gone bad if memory serves. Sounds alot like what happened in AU. Lived off E.Aster and River Rd in a large complex for probably 3 years round late 90's. Never really felt threatened or had trouble but not quite safe enough to not be armed 24/7. :dis: The respect for life has to be taught. Guess who's in charge of that department?
Here is the story on the AU student. http://www.cnn.com/2008/CRIME/03/06/auburn.student.ap/index.html
