It's smart move to have a veteran QB on your roster. I'm one of those who thinks Russell will struggle mightily if he starts from day one. I'd rather see them bring him along slowly instead of throwing him to the wolves. IMO, this will help Russell in the long run. He needs to get in camp ASAP.
More than anything, this is just a sign of how bad things are in Oakland. That franchise is clueless.
This is actually the best thing that could have happened for JR. He is still gonna get his huge deal, and now a little bit of pressure has been taken off of him. Plus he can learn some stuff from the guy that since nobody else really fits he is most compared too. Culpepper will start the season, and Jr will be there waiting. Once they lose five or six games Jr can come in and play and learn the game with no pressure because they will already be out of it. With the contract he is about to sign, there would have been unrealistic expectations from both the fans and the front office. He will not have to deal with that now.
This is absolutely great news for JR. Best case scenario is that JR doesn't see the field his rookie year.
You never know what may happen. Look at Drew Brees at SD. If Rivers hadn't missed part of camp, Rivers would have been the QB that year. Instead, Brees remained the QB and shocked everybody by how well he did. So well, that the Chargers had to resign him and Rivers had to ride the bench. If Brees hadn't injured his shoulder, he still might be the Chargers QB and Rivers might still be the backup QB.
Nope. No team will pay the salaries of both a quality starting QB and a highly drafted QB. That situation worked out perfectly for both Rivers and Brees.
I think this great news. If anything, they can work him in slowly. I doubt he will sit out the whole first year, but maybe he can enter like Vince Young did. Their wont be nearly as much pressure on him if he comes in the 2nd half of a game as opposed to starting day 1. Its not like the Raiders are banking in him to win this year. It sucks for us, as fans, to not see him, but it will be better for him down the road.
What do you mean? That's exactly what the Chargers were doing where they paying both Brees and Rivers. Sure, the Chargers probably didn't want to but Brees was doing too well to let him go for an unproven talent like Rivers no matter how highly the Chargers thought of Rivers.
So you mean to tell me that the Raiders are going to pay JR first pick money and DC starting QB money. For how long? Just like in the poor analogy you presented one of them is going to have to be moved. Regardless of injury.
