that is a good point. i dont think decisions should be made until closer to the time of the game, taking cues from VT on where they/their student body is in their healing process.

but i do agree that one of the best things that can be done is displaying good old fashioned southern hospitality. nothing can beat a friendly smile and some good food to help one heal. it can be made known without saying it, that while the situations are different, there is a bond of knowing heart ache and the struggke to get back to normal.

This is precisely what has bothered me since day one of this tragedy. You said it so very well.:thumb:

To clarify, I never said to NOT do something. But dwelling on it and making a big show of it is probably not in the best interest of the fanbase. As I mentioned Katrina, I pointed out that I know that most of us simply wanted to move forward and begin rebuilding our lives as best we could, if that meant cleaning up, volunteering, or even, in the worst case, rebuilding a home. They had a different tragedy that has a different impact, but I'm sure in 5 months time they will be ready for some football and be tired of the media hoopla. As far as I can tell, the majority of the alumni and student body are already tired of all of the media swarming on their campus.

As for HonorableHokie and his dislike for my avatar, I refer you to one of the many threads in a forum you cannot see as you're not a contributor in the "Round Table" discussing Macs and PCs and their pros/cons. There are several, and in each I weigh in that I own both and hate both. Hence the phrase, "Hatin' em both!" beneath my name. Please refrain from assassinating my character before even researching previous posts to see if I'm truly the cold-hearted bastard you believe me to be.

I find it odd that because of this tragedy, suddenly now no firearms can be mentioned anywhere without some tightwad throwing up a red flag like some sort of Jack Thompson on speed.

Tiga and LVTGRFN, thanks very much for defending me. :D

After the landspeed record JT set on Monday to pin the attacks on, "a gamer, obvisously", I don't think you really need to mention the gun...

Yeah I used to play Counterstrike. And doom. And GTA. I feel perfectly prepared to walk into a building and start firing. I also listened to Marylin Manson in the 90's. And Ozzy Osbourn and Judas Priest in the 80's. And I played D&D as well. Looks like I'm doomed.

    Seconded.

Seriously, it is like all of a sudden freedom of speech has been taken away in this country out of fear of "offending" someone.

The Imus situation, the Simen Cowell "rolling eyes" incident, shall I go on?

People need to quit being so oversensitive and focus on solving REAL issues.

And, of course, thoughts and prayers to our friends at VT.

I'l wait for some more opinions to come in but I psoed the question on another board that has some VT students on it and they seem to like the idea. Nothing too big but a simple gesture I think would be nice..

Here's a really novel throwback idea:

Say a prayer over tha PA system before the game.

It'll never happen, but wouldn't it be great--dare the supreme court or NCAA or law school alumni to do something to us for daring to honor the dead students with a prayer.
