This story seems familiar to me as well but not Saban to Bama but Saban from LSU to Miami. Saban was set for a college coaching long time empire at LSU but left for the lust of the NFL (and has now burned too many bridges along the way). I bet Carroll is tempted but he's already had the NFL taste. Does he realize the empire he is building at USC or does he slip back to the NFL?

SAN DIEGO (Associated Press) -- The Chargers received permission Tuesday to interview four candidates to replace fired head coach Marty Schottenheimer, including one-time San Diego offensive coordinator Norv Turner.
Turner was offensive coordinator with the Chargers in 2001. He's currently the offensive coordinator of the San Francisco 49ers. He interviewed for the Dallas Cowboys' head coaching job that went to Wade Phillips, the Chargers' former defensive coordinator.
The Chargers also received permission to interview Hall of Famer 49ers assistant head coach Mike Singletary and Chicago Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, both of whom interviewed for the Cowboys job. The fourth candidate is Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Rex Ryan.
The Chargers did not say when the candidates would be interviewed.

Leave it to Profootballtalk.com to add a little fuel to the PC to SD fire (as they always do, I know):

RUMORS SPREAD THAT CARROLL-TO-CHARGERS IS A DONE DEAL

There is increasing talk in league circles regarding suspicions that the San Diego Chargers already have a secret deal in place with USC coach Pete Carroll.

Folks are pointing to some of the same facts we outlined on Monday night, after word broke that Marty Schottenheimer had been fired. Some think that the most convincing proof was/is USC assistant Steve Sarkisian's abrupt about-face with the Raiders, followed days later by the decision of his former Trojan colleague, Lane Kiffin, to take the job.

Why else, the theory goes, would Kiffin take a job that Sarkisian didn't want unless they both knew that Carroll wasn't long for the USC gig, and that Sarkisian, not Kiffin, had been hand-picked to replace him?

Others are pointing to the fact that the first guy to be interviewed is Bears defensive coordinator Ron Rivera, who has no head-coaching experience but who helps the Chargers satisfy the Rooney Rule quickly, in the event that the Pete Carroll cat gets out of the bag prematurely and none of the minority candidates agree to sit for the job. (See Detroit Lions and Steve Mariucci.)

We're also told that there is worry among the incoming class of USC recruits regarding the possibility that Carroll is leaving. But Pete has opted not to even address the situation publicly.

If he were not going to be the San Diego coach, he could easily say so. The fact that he has said nothing at all speaks volumes, in our view. Especially since he now has a couple dozen nervous high school seniors who signed papers seven days ago under the assumption that the head coach would be sticking around for at least the next month.

Stay tuned. We predict that the Chargers will go through the motions with several candidates, and that Carroll will then swoop in out of the blue as the guy.

If that happens, look for Pat Kirwan to soon follow him -- and for G.M. A.J. Smith to definitely get the boot after the draft.

WE'RE NOT COMPLETE IDIOTS

We interrupt our coverage of the Nick Saban situation . . . to congratulate ourselves for our coverage of the Nick Saban situation.

Let's rewind to November 2, when we wrote that a "rumor [was] making the rounds that Dolphins coach Nick Saban might try to get out of Miami after the 2006 season."

As we said at the time: "The talk is that Saban sees no light at the end of the tunnel for a franchise with an aging nucleus and an unsettled quarterback situation. And the fact that he's on his way to the first losing record of his coaching career is 'killing him,' we're told.

"Or Saban could return to the college game. Though we don't follow 'amateur' football closely enough to know which jobs might come open, Joe Collegio of our sister site recently has mentioned that Mike Shula could be in trouble at Alabama.

"Keep in mind that this is simply wild-ass speculation. But what's not speculation is the chatter regarding Saban's unhappiness with his current situation. If the feeling becomes mutual, Saban's stay in South Florida could end up being just as long (and possibly not as successful) as Steve Spurrier's two-season stint with the 'Skins."

Not too shabby, in hindsight -- especially since plenty of folks supposedly "in the know" sneered at the suggestion that Saban would scamper. But we refused to ignore the rumors that continued to make the rounds in NFL circles, and that accelerated over the past couple of weeks, even as Saban denied that he would become the next guy to try to make the folks in Tuscaloosa forget about Bear Bryant.

Pete is not going to SD.

He wants total control over personnel, etc and that is one place where he won't get it. The owner and GM have no intention of handing over the reigns ala Miami to some college coach. They didn't give it to Marty who was seeking the same thing and 10x the NFL coach Petey is and they won't give it to Petey. So his chances are pretty slim in SD.

He is NOT going to the Bolts. Book it.

New York Times says that the Chargers are discussing the possibility of PC as their next coach.

Chargers officials are discussing Pete Carroll, but they are clearly not banking on him. The Chargers are looking for a coach to deliver a Super Bowl. USC has a coach with two national championships. Should they team up and unite Southern California, San Diego County will have only more impetus to help build a new stadium. The team's future in San Diego could be at stake.
