Around the SEC and college football:

    1. Former LSU HC, Mike Archer, is the new defensive coordinator at NC State. Archer resigned as defensive coordinator at Kentucky Jan. 10 to accept the job at NC State. He had previously worked with new NC State Coach Tom O’Brian at Virginia in 1991-1992.

    2. With the departure of QB Mitch Mustain (in school, but not rejoining the football team), Arkansas has commitments from Joe Chaisson, (6-3, 180-pound) quarterback from Beaumont, TX West Brook High and Allen (TX) High's Nathan Dick (6-4, 205-pound) quarterback, and younger brother of starting quarterback Casey Dick.

    3. Tennessee Offensive coordinator David Cutcliffe interviewed for the Cleveland Browns’ offensive coordinator job two weeks ago and was offered, but did not accept the position – it was filled by San Diago chargers tight end coach Rob Chudzinski.

    4. Tennessee receivers coach Trooper Taylor is on the short list to become the head coach Howard University.

    5. John Curtis HS defensive back Colby Arceneaux committed to Ole Miss last week. Arceneaux is rated one star by Scout.com and a two star by Rivals.com.

    6. Brenham, TX HS head football coach Glen West and his staff have been busy. Six members of the senior class are committed to Division I programs, including QB Jarrett Lee who is committed to LSU. During the past week LSU Coach Les Miles and new offensive coordinator Gary Crowton were in town, as well as Texas HC Mack Brown (2 commitments) and Nebraska HC Bill Callahan (1 commitment). Auburn, Houston, Arkansas, Texas A&M and TCU have also visited. Coach West said new Alabama coach Nick Saban and assistant coach Major Applewhite are expected to visit next week. He said he is not sure of the reason for Saban’s visit. However, there is now a lot of attention being given to next year’s senior class (Texas A&M has already offered two members of that class according to West). Not bad for a town of less than 15,000.

whenever i see mike archer i get the same feeling i get when i watch the "in memorium" segment of an awards show. and i see someone that i didn't know died.
actually it's the opposite of that feeling cuz it's more like "he's STILL coaching??!!!!"

Perhaps not. With OC salaries going over $400,000, its a damn good living with little of the stress of head coaching.

I just remembered an interview with Mike Archer a year or so ago when we were playing Kentucky. I don't remember it all, but I do remember him saying he always followed the Tigers, (except when they played Kentucky), still had good friends in Louisiana, and his memories of LSU were good.

Nice guy, probably a great coordinator, but just was not able to pull of the HC job. I know he was the beginning of a long dark period for LSU, but I like what I have heard him say, and what I have heard about him.

Archer was 31, way too young for the head coaching job. But he always was a good coordinator.

You can scratch #4. Taylor pulled his name.
