A good friend of mine is who very well versed in basketball flat out told me this team is poorly coached.

    For what it's worth.

It's hard to argue with his assessment.

LSU basketball has never been "well coached". Just look at quotes from opposing coaches since... well... forever.

I have always had doubts about Brady, but in view of the fact he took them to the final four last year I have had doubts about that assessment. Will give him a couple of more years to see if he can follow that up with impressive seasons before I start slaming him again.

i do not know enough about x's and o's to understand exactly what is going wrong. perhaps time wil help integrate terry martin into the offense, as well as get tack minor some more confidence (but not too much! i know he gets crazy) driving the ball.

another thing: i cant imagine many other teams being as red hot shooting against lsu as washington. i mean those guys were on fire. that happens sometimes, what can you do?

also, rolle needs to smarten up and figure out what is going on, but it is still early, so i will let him slide for now.

i think one solution is to let tasmin be a bigger part of everything. he always seems to have an idea of what is happening.

Despite my disappointment in the Washington game, here is where I have to at least throw in my two cents. First, I fail to acknowledge that somehow LSU is SO deficient in its offensive "strategy" and coaching. Afterall, I think Treloar has been a good Xs and Os influence on this team, and when I watch the offense, there is passing and there are open shots. I think if you really look at the stats, LSU is scoring 75 points a game (our opponents average 57.6), and some of their stats, like 3 point shooting % have actually improved over last year. If you also look at LSU's assist to turnover ratio, it's improved over last year.

The pass around the perimeter is expected and it would kind of depend on what kind of defense you're seeing. Against the zone, you expect them to move the ball around by passing around the perimeter, in to the zone and out, to get an open shot. When you go back and watch tape, LSU DOES get open jump point shots more often than not, which is the goal against a zone. Whether we hit them is another story. Against man, you certainly see cutting to the basket, screens, and the like (like against A&M).

Now, you can debate whether you'd like to see a motion offense versus a set offense, or whether you dislike Brady's basic offensive notion of feeding off Big Baby as a central focal point, or whether you'd prefer to see a fast breaking team, but what you get with Brady is a more controlled, patient offense. We have certainly upset our fair share of teams with good defense and an adequate offense in the past, and that's just a philosophical debate.

I think as time goes on and this team gels more, we'll develop better chemistry amongst the players and certain players will assert themselves on offense, so that's just part of the maturation of the team. I do think a coaching improvement will be making sure that the players have more aggression on offense... it's almost an attitude more than a scheme. I like G.Temple going in and throwing down that dunk. That was aggression on offense, and I think Brady should look to run more with Temple, Mason and now Martin on the wings, attack the basket with perimeter guys instead of settling for 3s.

The cause for our loss IMO was defense and hustle. We shot in the upper 40s% which is usually good enough for LSU to win. We gave up 82 points and let them shoot in the 50%s. That's the problem.

:geauxtige :bball: :champs: LSU IS A BASKETBALL SCHOOL. PACK THE PMAC.

    Disagree.
This team has no consistant threats from the outside this year.
If we were able to shoot the ball from the outside consistantly then the other
teams wouldn't be able to pack down inside and shut the offense down.
Like I said last nite, Brady can definitely recruit at all positions but when it
comes to guard we are usually lacking every year.
    That is for a reason.

We need better guards from the outside, simple as that.
The other team wants to shut our inside game down so you have to have
guards who can shoot over the top and penetrate the zone!

BTW, Its a credit to last years team because most teams that have no outside game can't make it to the final four.

No matter what type of defense is being played the way to hurt any defense is to get the ball inside by either dribble penetration or passing. As far as a half-ct offense, attack the paint, the heart of the defense. A lot of coaches don't use the dribble or screens enough against zone, they simply passing it around and think a good shot is an open shot.

Bobby Knight is credited with the invention of the true motion offense (3 out 2 in), which he still calls to this day, "the passing game". He has tweaked it some at Tx Tech, but he still uses a lot of movement of passing and screening. LSU has not been a team that uses lots of screening action. It simply comes down to the coach and their philosophy plus using the players strength to fit what type of offense that team tries to operate with success.

You are so right. Defense transition was awful and they got killed on the defense boards. Washington had 21 offensive rebounds! That is insane. Lack of intensity and hustle will kill any team no matter how much talent a team has.
