Man, that field drained great last night. I know there were renovations over the offseason, but can anyone inform me exactly what they did? I am not a Turf Management major, so I dont really know how this field drains sooo much better than the old ones. Anyone care to elaborate?
About 10 years ago, the field was entirely dug up and a sophisticated network of drains and pumps were installed that could remove water from the field quickly. It enabled them to put a lower crest on the field, which had traditionally been used to try to move water to the sidelines. But apparently the overlaying dirt and turf had insufficient permeability for the water to get through to the drains as fast as the drains could remove water. So water pooled on the field. This year they replaced the overlying soil, removing muds and clays and replacing the former 5" of sand with 11" of highly permeable sand and installing an expensive new grass turf. This turf is more rugged and was specially developed for athletic fields and it tolerates the sandy substrate. Looks like it worked well.
Yes it worked so well i am considering doing my yard like this. Problem is I don't have the 1 million to pay for 11' of sand.
They talked about it during the telecast last night. As red55 wrote they expanded the sand base. I thought I also heard them mention that the entire drainage system had been replaced and expanded.
Thank you saints? This was not funded by the nfl or from any profit from hostign saints games last year.
you are right, they only replaced the turf which was part of the agreement between lsu and the saints.
