I don't understand why not trying to get as many points on the board as possible would make a bad OC. We have a great depth at rb, athletic wide receivers, and good qb's. Why not air it out more? With this much talent on offense you can pretty much run anything and be successfull. I just feel like Jimbo limits what we can do on offense. I mean if he can't score points with these players then he needs to find another job doing something else. Ive never liked the way he has run this offense, im not just talking about last year. Hes overrated if he is supposed to be one of the top OC's in the nation.
Its not his job to win the games either. Our offense is supposed to put up the points and our defense is supposed to win the games. If we put up 17+ every game, I don't see how we can lose if our defense plays up themselves. I would like to see Miles be more involved with the offense. I would like to see a change.
It doesn't. What Cparso is talking about is the risk/reward part of playcalling. Sometimes it is not essential to put up more points, when you could use the clock to your advantage. However, I do not completely agree with Cparso on this. While I think there are times to play the game both ways, Jimbo has proven to be overly conservative at times. I do think that if our defenses weren't as strong as we are used to them being, then he would adjust his play calling accordingly.
Ch0sn0ne sees the logic. Offense isn't just about scoring as many points as possible. It's about posession, field position, clock time, and having enough points to win. I'm not saying that Jimbo can't be too conservative at times, but just that overall he has a very good record and a good philosophy. Also, to critique your description of our offensive weapons: For all our depth at RB - were down to one decent backup RB for several games last year, who cares how athletic a WR was if he couldn't catch, and young QBs who still made mistakes and have to be put in good situations.
Jimbo is so confident in our defense that he knows he will get the ball back. This makes him think that he doesn't have to score on every drive. I hate that mindset. Call some risky plays JF, and if they pick it off that is where our dominant defense comes into place. Throw the ball downfeild and actually use JR's arm and our athletic receivers. Attack Attack...and then plays some strong d. jimbo fisher:angryfire
I see we haven't recovered from instant gratification syndrome. I know it's hard to believe, but sometimes it's better to have a long, drawn out drive that may not result in points than a flashy string of plays that ends in a field goal. Running down clock and controling the field is vital in college football, especially in the SEC. Do you really think that Jimbo is so dense that he hasn't realized there is some predictability to his play calling. It works. Cut down on turnovers and make people beat you by executing, not taking advantage of your mistakes. He knows that by doing this he is putting LSU in position to win most of the time. Why? Because 99% of the time, we have the best players on the field.
Thats fine but I just dont like that approach. Since we have the better players prove it by driving down the other teams throat. I think its just a waste of talent to just play the field position game. Good teams will beat us because they will execute.
Out of curiousity, how would you describe your understanding of the game of football? edit: I realize this sounds like a veiled insult, but that's not really my intent.
Sometimes that is the way to go, sometimes it isn't. The trick is knowing when to go for the throat. This is where I think we can do a little better, but for the most part we don't have to.
I understand all that is being said about Jimbo's scheme as OC. I am not saying the guy needs to tell JR to throw it as far as he can every play, but I just want him to periodically during the game let him air it out. I just think he doesn't test the defenses secondary enough. I am more of a fan for the spread out offense with 4 receivers on the feild and take risks throughout the game. LSU is famous for its running game, and that offense doesn't really focus on that so I dont know. I guess just be happy that I am not the OC because we would either win big or lose big. I lose and I will accept defeat. well played:hihi:
