The following is a post taken directly from a Texas message board (Hornfans.com). It doesn't sound like they support us to me. They could care less about the whole "three pete" thing now that they won the MNC. My only concern is that those outside of the LSU family will take this view as well. If so, we'll be worse off than when we started. Here it is...... "LSU fans have the most pathetic inferiority complex in sports history. They are gravy training on UT's win worse than anything I've ever seen. They need to grow up and get over it. They split the NC with consensus #1 USC and they should be happy their team even got to say that much given that the Coaches were forced by a stupid contract to surrender their right to vote for the team they thought was the best (and, no, the AP -- which is not beholden to the NCAA -- never "gave up the right" to their 70 year tradition of awarding their #1 team their championship). Bragging about that coaches poll vote is like Saddam Hussein bragging about being "elected" president of Iraq. This is a stupid argument and I wish some of our fans would stop degrading themselves and our win by encouraging it. I also wish these pathetic LSU fans would go away. USC and its fans have about 10 times as much class as those idiots and I hope they wallow in mediocrity with RP and Les for the forseeable future."
This isn't surprising at all. First, yeah, I can see how Texas fans get annoyed by this because, well, we are calling attention to ourselves through this. One reason why USC is hated passionately on this site is because *they* and their "AP title" stole attention LSU rightfully earned in 2003, so I can relate to Texas fans feeling somewhat the same about "onepeat.com". Also, you better believe they'll be angry about RP for some time to come, so none of this surprises me at all. No worries: we'll get a laugh at their expense when LSU "upsets" UT in the NCAAs this March. Bring it.
I couldn't agree with you more. This is apparently the opinion of 1 person, not the entire forum. And a small minded person, at that. I don't appreciate being called an idiot and trust me, his opinion wouldn't be this way if they had lost the game to USC. I wouldn't worry about it. I'm proud of the Tigers' accomplishments over the years and don't care what anyone thinks!
The other reason TX fans are in a snit. Just like OU fans, they can't stand Les becuase he refused to grovel at their feet. Yes, he got beat, but he didn't act like a whipping boy in the process.
First, thanks for the welcome. Second, I read the Texas message boards from time to time because I used to live in Austin. I have plenty of friends who are UT fans. Most of them are good people, but they can be arrogant at times with their whole "We're Texas" mentality. As far as this being the opinion of just one person, I don't think so. If you don't believe me, check out the board for yourself. I guess the reason it bothers me so much is because I used to live there and had "adopted" Texas as my 2nd favorite team. I'm still proud as hell to be an LSU alumnus and a Tiger fan. I'm just concerned that this whole billboard thing will be re-opening an old wound that should be left well enough alone. The last thing I want to see is the media using this as a springboard for another "reasons why USC was the 'real' national champions in 2003" campaign.
Here is the deal. Texas and LSU compete for recruits on a yearly basis. Fans of each school will say anything to discount the successes of the opposing school. It's pretty much that cut and dry. On the other hand, a Texas fan donated the last $1,000. That's probably what really upset them most. Oh and one more thing.. As for the national media using this... Ask yourself this: Can the feeling you had when the clock ticked down to 0:00 at the end of the NC game in '03 ever be taken away from you? No.
I live in San Diego. I'm going to see the board the dy it goes up. I think it is going to be up in mid Feb. I'll take some pictures and post them up here soon.
I read somewhere that they plan to do the same to us with either a billboard in Baton Rouge or ads in the local newspaper. Has anyone else heard this? Will the Advocate allow them to purchase an ad with an anti-LSU message in it? If all this comes to pass, it may turn into a major PR war. If so, I hope to hell that we win it!!! :geauxtige
