It takes three years to really judge a coach. Archer had a great first year, but by year three, it was obvious that he was out of his league. It was obvious with Hallman, too. I'll never understand why Joe Dean let him hang around for the fourth year. I think Miles is doing well and I'm very pleased. There will definitely be a drop-off next year with 21 departing seniors and our tough games onthe road again, and if Miles goes 8-3 then I will be happy. In his third year, he will be playing with many of his own recruits and his system will be well-integrated. That will be the year that will define him. We can't go around firing coaches with winning records if we expect to ever hire another top coach. Nick was the best coach in Tiger history and we may never get another like him, but if Miles keeps us in and around the top-10 with a occasional shot at a national championship, we couldn't do much better.
There are moments when I doubt things about our team, but, I work hard to overcome momentary doubt in order to replace it with quiet confidence. I voted that the jury is still out. But, I am quietly confident that we have a good coach in Coach Miles. I'm also confident that he will get better from season to season.
Red you are correct. The thing is next year an 8-3 season will be too much for the Miles haters to take. You think it's bad now with a 10-1 record and playing in the SECCG, wait and we will have a total melt down. If Coach Miles does not win every game by 20 the haters will only hate, he has no room for a loss, three with a young team next year will be too much. As I have seen on this fourm many times, we are in a new era of LSU Football where it is only expected and demanded to win, anything short and you should be gone........:dis:
Good points. I'm sure some fans will call for Miles' head next year should we lose more than one game, which is possible b/c of our schedule. There is a reason why we won 2 SECC and a MNC in odd numbered years ... schedule is more favorable, like this year. Also, I think Saban's god-like status around here makes some forget that he lost at least 3 games 4 out of his 5 years. We lost 3 games last year with basically the same talent level as this year. Going 10-1 at LSU is a major accomplishment under any circumstance. Doing it after what happened to start this season is even more amazing. With that said, I think the jury is still out until he gets his own players in the system. We'll know in a couple of years. But my hat is off to Miles for keeping it together this year...
Whoever voted that he would be the downfall, really need to review their history. Do you want to be like Nebraska? Fired Frank Solich after a 9-2 season, because he wasn't Tom Osbourne.. just 2 years after making it to the National Championship game.... Calahan hasn't taken them to a bowl game since... I'll bet Husker fans are wishing they had Solich back now.
I voted "the jury is still out". I don't think Miles is a great coach. I also doubt his game planning, and game day coaching abilities. But those things are really of very little consequence. Because all a head coach at a major university is, is a manager. So as long as Miles hires good coordinators, which he's shown he can do, & recruits well, which he's shown he can do, he can keep LSU a very successfull program. I like Red's analysis that it takes 3 years to judge a coach. As of right now, Miles has given us good reason to believe he will be successful, but just because you win in your first year (or even 2nd year), it doesn't guarantee future results.
What the hell are you talking about? G Att Com Pct Yds Int Yds/Att TD Rating 11 292 177 60.6 2324 8 8.0 15 138.9 60% twice as many TD's as interceptions, 200 yards a game passing looks like we have a qb. 2 4th guarter winning drives this season alone, not to mention last year against OSU in his very first game played bringing us back for the come from behind victory. He's 31th in passing efficiency which is the top 25%. You need to watch some football and stop saying we need a QB because JR is our quarterback and will only continue to get better. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/ncaa/stats/2005/divia/individual/passing_efficiency_byQB_RATING.html
