LSU will once again be open for classes on tuesday, if we can be a functioning University on Tuesday, we can play a football game on Saturday.
With all due respect Okie, I dont really think Miles or Skip will have much say in this. To a limited extent O'keefe will have some say but not much. This is a public university and can easily be commandeered, if necessary, by the state or feds. The decision on where to play LSU football games will indirectly be made by those much higher on the political food chain. It is becoming abundantly clear that Baton Rouge is being positioned as the main staging point for relief and reconstruction efforts. With the number of people that FEMA, The National Guard, etc are pouring into BR its painfully obvious they are staying for a while. BR itself will not be the same for a LONG, LONG time and that has a direct effect on what will happen with the campus. As much as it pains me, LSU will also be changed for a long time as well. This is a dire catastrophe of an unimagined magnitude. If someone would have told me 2 weeks ago that the entire city of New Orleans would be evacuated and nobody allowed to return for a couple months or more I would have said no way, no how. Just goes to show you that anything is possible including the sad prospect that LSU's entire football season will be displaced.
I don't think so. BR is the closest point with communications and power and is a main staging area right now. But the problem is further south. In a week or two, much of the recovery operations will be moving closer to the problem areas. The New Orleans Airport is a likely candidate. The State University is not going to be shut down by this crisis.
Agreed. Plans will start changing and things will start getting along, somewhat changed but the whole world isn't going to stop. The BR authorities aren't going to be able to take this pace much longer and niether will Lafayette and Houston. The military will probaly start getting tent cities built and some of the abadoned bases will start being used. It would not surprise me if the feds are holding a trump card that they may have to modify that was to be used in the event of a dirty bomb attack that would have wiped out a city for some time. If not we are in a bind because we have no contingecies for anything.
Here is an article that apeared in the advocate this morning. http://www.2theadvocate.com/stories/090205/lsu_lsu001.shtml I think that if LSU says that it is safe to play in TS next week and that it would not hinder the releif efforts (remember that they would not say that untill talking with city and state officials first) then nobody is really going to override that decision. IMO we will be playing in TS next weekend.
Wow, how profound. Thank you for posting what all of us should be thinking, You can add the Mayor of Baton Rouge, the Head of the Baton Rouge police and the Gov. to your list as well. I'm sure they are going to make the best decision possible given all of the facts and we should all stick behind them. They have a myriad of things to take into consideration and will piss off many people no matter what decision is made and we should all try to realize they will be trying to do what is best for everyone and everything concerned.
If we can play WITHOUT compromising the safety or welfare of anyone, then we absolutely should. But a football game is so insignificant compared to peoples lives.
The game will be played next week. I wouldn't be surprised even if President Bush attends the game. I know things have been moving slow but things will pick up today and all weekend since the President is coming to town. Agencies who were probably dragging arse will be moving 90 to nothing when the POTUS is close by. I hope I am right. LSUDAN
